Ruined Sebenza?

Ok, I think I might have done something weird, but I used Smooth Kote, the BP 2000
powder and the Hi-slip grease on my sebenza... it actually made the motion
slower...what should i do? Clean it off? And then what do I put on it? And where do I
put it at?

Any suggestions are welcome... right now I'm crying over my sebbie...

Humpty,
I don't have and answer, but I do have a suggestion. Post this over at the Chris Reeve Knife Forum.

You're cool Humpty, don't sweat it. First, take the knife COMPLETELY apart. Clean EVERYTHING inside and out with WD-40 and good ol' soap and warm water. Now, Apply a small amount of (Rem Oil) or other, to bothsides of the spacers, the pivot bearing, (inside and out) and the blade where the the spacers contact, and the inside of the blade where the pivot bearing slides in. Put it all back together carefully and rotate the blade several times to work the lube around. Now, shake the access oil out and wipe clean, inside and out. Good luck.

I've found that alcohol works well at removing Smooth Coat too.

Good Luck.

Humpty,
Hold on big fellow!

I don't think we have a ruined knife,..maybe just a little lubricant overload. The mighty Sebenza is a very tightly fitted knife, and really doesn't hqave 'room' in the pivot area for that much 'stuff'. A couple of questions first...

Did you disassemble the knife to apply the lubricants? If not, you really can't get Smooth-Cote, BP2000, or Hi-Slip into where it needs to be on this knife.

If you did disassemble the 'Benza, are you sure you reassembled it correctly[and adjusted], this can have a MAJOR impact on how the blade rotates.

I would start by flushing out what you have done, experience tells me that break cleaner or 'gun scrubber'[in the spray can from BIRCHWOOD CASEY] reallly dissolves the SENTRY SOLUTIONS family or products on contact. I mean instantly! So clean up what you 've got. Then make sure you have got the knife adjusted the way you want. The Sebenza, with itspolished internal bushing and its bronze washers shouldn't need alot of lub., but if I wanted mine REALLY smooth, I would disassemble the Knife, clean it really good, apply Smooth-Cote to just the pivot area and washers.Let dry[help it along with hair dryer], then , with a q-tip, I would rug a little BP2000 powder into the pivot area and washers. Just a very small amount will do. THe treated area will take a metallic, silver-grey sheen. Re-assemle the knife, and re-adjust. I would NOT use Hi-slip grease in this knife. The Smooth-Cote and BP2000 are DRY lubricants, and will not attract dirt or pocket lint, but the grease can. It also can cause a tolerance problem in your finely fitted[read that tightley fitted] Sebenza. You should not need Hi-Slip Grease for this application.

And be sure to keep the locking surfaces clean and lubricant free. These surfaces need to be lubricant free to work best.

Hope this helps. I've had great experience with the Sentry Products,...just be sure to use the ones you need, and remember, a little goes a LOOOONG way with this stuff. Less is more.

PS, you may find that with this High quality knife, a little Sentry Tuf-Glide is all you need in the pivot area, and you don't have to disassemble the knife.

Humpty,
It does sound a little weird. Rather than ask Chris you could ask us. Chris is familiar with our knife care products- TUF-CLOTHs and TUF-GLIDE, not the products you chose to use.

Whatever effect you are experiencing is not an indication you have ruined your knife. It sounds like you have gone a little overboard on the lubricants, like many others you really love your Sebenza. An analogy might be like trying to put 10 quarts of oil in an engine that has a 5 quart capacity.

You should clean off the lubes you put on using mineral spirits and then use TUF-GLIDE which really is used for knife lubrication.

Although Sentry Solutions makes more than 6 different lubricants we do not recommend using than all at one time. If you would like to learn more on the proper usage of our products please visit http://www.sentrysolutions.com or please feel free to call me toll-free at 1-800-546-8049, I am at my desk as we “speak?”.

This doesn't sound like the same problem, but here's something to watch out for when re-assembling a 'benza. Be *very* careful that the pivot bushing is centered in the washers. If not a washer might seat just a little bit underneath the bushing and throw the blade's alignment completely off.

I thought I'd ruined mine the first time I put it back together. Luckily the washer had just slipped under the bushing. Re-assembling (carefully) the second time fixed the problem.

Jon

PS - Hope I'm not the only person this has happened too...

No problems,
Don't worry, it has happened to me too, to reiterate:

1) I used too much grease.
2) I was not careful enough in reassembly,
and I think one one the washers were
slightly out of alignment.

All fixed now though.

After you clean out all that junk as was suggested, get some of the "florinated grease" (teflon) that CRK sells and was originally on your knife when it was new and smooth and use it according to directions. Like new again.

The advantage of a Sebenza is that it can be easily taken apart for cleaning. I use the Reeve lube for my 'Benza and it works great.

Thanks guys... I will try some of those things. I have some more questions, but I'll e-mail a couple of you guys with some more little specific things.

I also assembled it wrong in the sense that the bottm washer was a bit aligned. I quickly figured that one out and then fixed it. BUt the fact is, did I waste money in buying this whole kit? Should I just get the Tuf-Glide or Flourintine??

What else can this stuff be used for. Thanks guys, the action on my sebbie wasn't that smooth to begin with and now i've slowed it down, but I'll do some of those thing to fix it!

Mark,
I have found that Tuf-Glide alone does not have enough lubricant properties for the Sebneza.
The Hi-Slip Grease works excellent making the Sebenza perform Smooth as Silk everytime.

I'm sorry; I'm gonna have to disagree with EVERYONE on this. You have TOTALLY destroyed your Sebenza! You must get rid of it! Remember Aldous Huxley's immortal words from "Brave New World" (or a variation thereof): "'Tis better to end than to mend"... therefore, you should dispose of the knife ASAP. It just so happens that I am in need of some... uhhh... scrap titanium. Yea, that's it! Scrap titanium. (:::looks around suspiciously::

I agree with Kodiak. The Reeve flourinated grease works better than anything on the Sebenza. Great stuff.
