I'll open a passaround forum, but before I do so, I want a hard set of rules & code of conduct written that is enforceable.

IE,
By agreeing to take part in the passaround for knife X, I (username) agree to the following conditions:
1. I release BladeForums.com, it's members, etc from any liability that results from my participating in this event.
2. I agree that I will have X knife for X days, then send it to the next person on the list, at my expense. I agree that postage and insurance are my responsabilty and that should the knife fail to reach the next member of the list, it is my responsability to replace it.
3. I agree that should I fail to live up to my obligations in this passaround, I will be banned and my personal information will be published so that others will have "fair warning".

What else needs to be added? What are the other topics that need addressed?

4. I affirm that I am over 18 years of age, and that the knife involved in the passaround is legal to possess in my jurisdiction.

By participating in the passaround, I also agree to adhere to the above posted rules, and any violation of the rules will cause my membership at Bladeforums.com to be revoked. I also understand that if I am a Gold, Premium, Knifemaker, or Dealer member, and my membership is revoked, I will not be entitled to any refunds of said membership fees.

I'm sure others will have things to add.

Let me see...a few things I would add: (taken from my signup threads)

5. A passaround has inherent risks to it. If you choose to participate, you agree that the money being sent is not in exchange for any good or service. (for paid passarounds)

6. When sending the knife, send by a method that requires signature confirmation and insure the package for $x. This will be more expensive, but it puts everyone at a much lower risk.

I will also put up a FAQ about my own type of raffle passarounds.

Can't add to the rules, but have a question:

Where's the forum going to be located?

Makes sense to me to put it either under General Knife Discussion, or perhaps better: The Knife Exchange.

I for one eagerly anticipate getting involved with the pass arounds. Don't know if my two cents of review will be worthy but I am willing to try!

Rule 999: Any member that doesn't forward the pass around to the next Joe on the list shall be hunted like a deer and shot! :p

Cool, thanks Spark!

I'll only add that there is some interpretation about timing. For example an extra day or two no biggie, an extra week maybe, but need reasons why. etc.

Spark: If you create the forum, I can start putting up the needed information in sticky threads. I figure a rules thread, a how-to start your own passaround thread, and a FAQ thread would make an excellent start.

BTW, is there any way to allow me to round up the previous and current passaround threads and move them into the passaround forum? There are quite a few threads floating about regarding various passarounds.

Rules first, then the forum is opened. This is for everyone's protection.

Passaround forum rules:

By agreeing to take part in any passaround posted on Bladeforums, you agree to the following conditions:

1. I release BladeForums.com, it's members, etc from any liability that results from my participating in this passaround. This includes any damages that may result from using, abusing, or testing the passaround knife.

2. I agree that I will have the passaround knife for a set period of days as specified in the passaround thread, then send it to the next person on the list, at my expense. I agree that postage and insurance are my responsibility and that should the knife fail to reach the next member of the list, it is my responsibility to replace it.

3. I agree that should I fail to live up to my obligations in this passaround, I will be banned and my personal information will be published so that others will have "fair warning". This will be left up to the discretion of the moderators. Remember that participation in the passarounds is a priveledge and can be revoked at any time.

4. I affirm that I am over 18 years of age, and that the knife involved in the passaround is legal to possess and carry in my jurisdiction. If you choose to participate in paid passarounds, you agree that the money being sent is not in exchange for any good or service and you agree to release BladeForums.com, it's members, etc from any liability for the loss of the funds invested in the passaround if the knife is lost or destroyed.

When sending the knife, send by a method that requires signature confirmation and insure the package for an amount equal to or greater than the replacement cost of the knife. This will be more expensive, but it puts everyone at a much lower risk. The knife must be carefully packaged with all seams taped and the knife secured within the package. USPS is considered to be the cheapest and fastest service for mailing a passaround knife.

Every person should make the best effort to pass along the knife in as good of condition as possible, if not better. If the blade is dull and you feel confident in your sharpening skills, put a fresh edge on the knife before you send it along. Clean any grime or residue off the blade before passing it along. In the event the knife is broken, fails, or is otherwised destroyed, get in contact with whoever is in charge of the passaround immediately. If the knife has failed due to defect, arrange to have the knife returned for warranty service. If the knife failed due to abuse that is not covered by the warranty, it is your responsibility to replace the knife. The bottom line is every participant is responsible for getting the knife to the next person on the list.

By participating in the passaround, you also agree to adhere to the above posted rules, and any violation of the rules will cause your membership at Bladeforums.com to be revoked. You also understand that if you are a Gold, Premium, Knifemaker, or Dealer member, and your membership is revoked, you will not be entitled to any refunds of said membership fees.

How does that look Spark?

Yeehaw!

Thanks Steven I think that's a fine job of putting it together. I would just like to suggest that to #3 we add something that says as determined by joint discetion of the moderators.

Also I would like to add:

The knife will be carefully packaged with all seams tapes, not loose but secured within the package. I would also like it explictly sadi to use USPS, sometimes some have shipped UPS no biigie but generally it takes much longer and not what we agreed to.

Steven would you consider amending your rules if you think my suggestion are appropriate?

Thanks

Rules suggestion

Shouldn't you have some kind of rule describing an expectation of what condition the knife should be in before it is shipped. If the knife arrived in one piece, should we expect it to remain that way, or can I simply sweep up what is left from the testing area and forward a bag of bits to the next person in line? Should I make an attempt to resharpen the knife, to clean it, or can I just clamp the blade in a vise and test the locks breaking point?

I hate to say this, but the rules were so long, I gave up and didn't finish reading them.

It would be easier to read if it was more concise and blunt:

----------------------------------------------------------

1. Bladeforums.com is not reponsible for anything pertaining to this passaround.

2. I will ship the knife insured appropriately and within the designated timeframe and agree to replace it if lost.

3. I am over 18 years of age, and the knife involved in the passaround is legal to possess and carry in my jurisdiction.

4. I understand that I am not exchanging money for any goods.

5. I agree to pass along the knife in the condition I received it, or better.

6. If I violate any of these rules, I will be banned and not allowed to participate in any more passarounds.

----------------------------------------------------------

Then, leave it up to the person doing the passaround to suggest the timeframe, preferred carrier, etc.

Dan
