Rules for Poke Salad Eating

My Grandmother made this all the time, she boiled it with 3 changes of water with a little baking soda in the first two boils. Very good and never had any ill effects.

Other folks made Poke Berry pie with the berries when I was young, I was told that if the seeds were removed and the juice was well cooked it was not poision. Granny did not agree so I have not personally tried it.

Her rules:
Know for sure that it is Pokeweed, not another plant
Pick young leaves with no red tint.
Rinse leaves well, tear leaves away from the veins and put in a large pot with a teaspoon of baking soda and bring to a boil
Repeat
Boil third time with some salt and bacon grease but no baking soda
Drain and serve with hot sauce
