Rummy's gone

Astonishing news conference - Rummy's gone, though Bush notes that he'd intentionally misled the press on that when they asked as recently as last Sunday. By then, his decision to replace Rumsfeld with Bob Gates had already been made - but he wanted to keep the decision out of the election stream.

GWB sounded very, very different than he has in ages - making the right noises about bipartisanship etc. Two days ago, this wouldn't have happened.

One can't help but wonder if the election result would have been very different, had this version of Bush emerged a year or two ago.

I'm gonna miss Rumsfeld. He did such a great job. Maybe him and "Brownie" can start some sort of a consulting business.

I expect he'll land on his feet somewhere, and if worst comes to worst, will receive a presidential pardon.

Might be hard to get that pardon from a co-defendant.

It would amount to an enourmous waste of taxpayer dollars in a fruitless effort.:barf:

If you don't have the two thirds vote then why waste the time and money. Oh yea, because you don't want people to realize you've got no plan, and no leadership.

After a time, you may find having is not so pleasing a thing as wanting. it is not logical, but it is often true.

>world economic competition
>declining natural resources
>Islamic extremism and terrorism
>nuclear proliferation
>Illegal immigration
>increasing world overpopulation
>increasing cost of non-drug medical costs (drugs account for < 10% of total medical expenditures)
>aging population

I look forward to the solutions.

My take on Rumsfeld is different....I truely believe the man played his cards as they were dealt him, and didn't give a rat's ___ If I (or you) approved or not. You probably don't agree with him, but respect him for doing what he thought was best at the time....a true character :D

This is probably the nicest thing Bush could have done for an old friend that has been tried by fire. If he didn't leave now, then what exactly would he have to look forward to with a dem controlled congress? I'm not saying he was the best guy for the job, but like JN I think he did what he could with what he had.

Quite honestly, I'm glad this election is over (well, over-ish). I'm so tired of hearing how this was a huge blow to "right-wingers" (personally, I'm a centralist with an ever so slight right lean). I think it's the six year itch. Same thing as what happened back in '94. So a bunch of conservative dems were elected. Besides crazy ol' P-lo becoming the speaker, I don't think anything is going to change much. More gridlock. Now instead of an entire party blaming Bush, they're going to have to sort out their own priorities between the far left and the quasi-left while the reps watch and probably kind of hope they goof the next 2 years up so that another rep prez gets the go ahead.

I don't think it's going to be THAT bad or THAT big of a change. It certainly isn't going to be the horror story painted by the Reps of the newly elected Dems strolling onto the hill hand-in-hand with their same sex partner all the while laughing at their diabolical plan to tax us into the poor house as they punch a pregnant underaged lower-income girl in her womb and abort her baby without telling her parents then harvest its stem cells to give life to an anti-gun frankenstein WITHOUT the fear of Jesus in its heart;)

That was a very tasteless joke on my part. I'm just really tired of ultra conservatives as much as I tired of ultra left dems. At least the far right usually makes us more money and spends less....times have changed. However, I do expect more of the same from either side of the aisle. Instead of a party to follow, I have a list of things I want as an American citizen from my leadership:

  1. I don't want to be blown up by a terrorist while I am ANYWHERE on American Soil. It's ok if i'm in the middle east. It serves me right for being over there. I have xbox, porkchops, and my wife in a bathing suit over here. The American dream:)
  2. I would like to NOT be nuked ANYWHERE. No amount of video games, tasty animals, or tastier wives is worth glowing the dark.
  3. I would like to have a border that is not so pourous that the entire 3rd Reich could goose step across in fluffy pink boots and no one would know about it...well except for the Mexicans sneaking in, but they won't tell anyone because they don't speak english.
  4. Which brings me to my next point. Can we mandate that all people coming into this country for work purposes be required at least have the grasp on the english language enough to order a Big Mac without tying up the line for hours while they point and mumble? The food is crappy enough. Don't make it irratating AND crappy.
  5. I don't want any more ads scaring my grandparents about how their SS check is in danger. <<whistle>> Yo, I'm 25 years old ova here. Give me some kind of heads up as to whether or not I can expect a bonus when I retire (not banking on it at this point). If you can't guarantee me a check, then please let me opt out to literally take 30% of my paycheck and set it on fire. This will accomplish the same thing for me as YOU taking it from me but will be much more enjoyable to watch (i bet the ink gives off a pretty blue flame).

Sorry about the rant:o

One of your best, Jake.

"I have xbox, porkchops, and my wife in a bathing suit over here. The American dream :) "

Anybody would be proud to have that for a sig line.

That was a great gush, Jake. You just get better with age.

When Bush arrived in Washington, he had very high hopes of ending the bitterness there. He'd had a disapointing election win, and recieved none of the usual honeymoon from the press. Many of his words were being fed back to him in the public arena- Collisium style, and he was doing his best not to 'step in it' again. He went right ahead and talked with optimism about working with the other team. He'd been successful with the Texas legislature- while Governor with a Democratic majority in both houses. He could not hide his enthusiasm, even now, and seemed decent if not a Boyscout about the prospect.

We know what happened. Whatever else one may think of George Bush, he believed and tried, taking a lot of hits, setbacks and whatnot before withdrawing. This was a visible process, a little American play brought to us nightly on our Television sets. You could see the lines of resignation forming around his eyes, and almost hear the sighs.

When he says now that he'll reach out a hand- he will. I believe him. I notice Nancy Pelosi chose the timing of her victory pronouncement/introduction with no notice to be an hour earlier than Bush's already established news conference. That must be an example of bipartisanship. Well, heck, old munk, it was her Party, let her have it; but I'm not the only one who understood the importance and meaning behind the timing.

I'll be interested to see the Show the next two years. I hope somehow there are a few people in Washington interested in more, in getting something done. I'm not a Bush baby. He's not my thing, man, but he does have some honorable traits.

And here I was thinking that you were talking about the guy we met in Baja California - he'd trink rum (w/ a hint of coke) all day, hence "Rummy". I was surprised you knew him, too, but I guess I was wrong :)

I love it Jake. Great post!

Great post Jake. I agree about English as a requirement. Me.. I'm tired of trying to find an ENGLISH description of an item while shopping at WalMart. I'm in Wyoming for christ sakes!!! There may be a small, growing Mexican population here in Sheridan... but us plain ole english speaking folks are still in the majority. I DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO REMEMBER MY 7th GRADE SPANISH CLASS in order to SHOP!!! I swear it took me three minutes of looking at a carton to find an english version of what I was looking at

Rummy will do fine on the $10,000 an appearance lecture circuit.

Checks and balances are a good thing. Having the white house the senate and the house of representatives all in the hands of any party is bad news. I like this elections results especialy if the republicans take virginia, who knows how long it will be before those votes are done being counted. It's pretty safe to say the Tester will win in Montana(I think) even if his opponant still wont conceed. I would bet that if the democrats take both houses they will loose the next presidential election, being in oposition is easy governing is harder.
Whoever is in power in 2010ish is going to have a whole lot trouble when china stops lending hundreds of billions of dollars a year and its time to start paying it back. Whatever you think about the Iraq war in terms of security, the way it has been financed (on credit) has kept the country from its economic costs but cannot do so indefinatly. Mst be quite the credit card, I can't even buy a car on my Visa.

Grob, you just managed to do something I didn't think possible; to make a this paranoid even more so. Yikes. China and debt blackmail. Yikes.
