Rummy's gone

To me the whole thing is this. They had a Supreme Court that supported them. They had both houses of Congress. They had the executive branch.

Like Munk said Bush came in talking of bipartisanship but never once demonstrated it. They cut Democrats totally out of the legislative process, unlike the Dems ever did to them. They threatened to do away with the Filibuster.

They behaved like a bunch of brownshirts and the public tossed them out. Wow Democracy still works

I dont know about black mail, really the ability to collect international debt is pretty much based on the lending country having more power (military and economic) than the borrower. The only real blackmail china could pull off would be to stop lending. Keep that conspiricy theory khuk sharp.

Then again I might only be writing this because they got to me since my last post and dont want you getting suspicious....

You may want to think about that.

Anyway, I hope things will get better now. Bush needed a kick in the ass, and this did it. If the Republicans had behaved like authentic Republicans they would not be without house nor home.

Sorry hollow, but when the Dems were in power they would actulally tell republican members of committees to not bother showing up. The republicans actually tried sharing power with the dems in the senate. Didn't that work great. This was their great mistake, forgetting they were republicans. At that point, who needs them. All I can say is hold on to your ass (and your wallet) for the next 4 years.

I think that the wallet's perhaps safer now. The two administrations which racked up the largest deficits, to my knowledge, have both been Republican. Some fiscal conservative friends of mine on another forum have long held that while they preferred Bush to the Dems, that in no way did they really consider his spending to reflect conservative values of thrift. In fact, both on domestic and military spending, they found him to be pretty well inept with keeping the wallet in his hip pocket.

Bush made all the right noises yesterday about bi-partisanship. He made similar noises years back, calling himself a "uniter." Rumsfeld's departure is, I think, a clear signal that he understands that as a "lame duck" president (technical term, not meant as disparagement), he's little choice but to look for bipartisan ways to get stuff done. Or it simply won't get done.

I think the next 2 years will test the mettle of both sides. How much will either camp be willing to forego obvious political point making, and settle in to really address the issues in a thoughtful, compromise-intensive way? God knows. While I'm cynical as hell, I've still got my fingers crossed.

I think on the uniting bit Bush does not make noises. He is the team player. His cabinet choices reflect this. Rummy going was a clear signal Bush knew the writing on the wall and was listening. Might be a tad clumsy, but that is an indication of his honesty, not petty criminal calculation as so many want to assign Bush. Bush said it well several years ago; his walk was characterized as a swagger. Bush told the press it was not a swagger. It was just walking. "In Texas we call it; 'walking'."

Tom, I'm afraid it's just plain human nature, that once you are in, you begin to think of ways to get votes. My Government is busy selling itself through advertisement and inaction. None of the hardest questions get answered, questions like illegal drugs and immigration. Too many votes to lose.
Dick Morris said last night that the Republicans were in danger of alienating the Mexican American vote for a hundred years; for the illegals policy proposals.

Ironic- Bush want's an amnesty program for illegals here and working. His party did/does not.

No, I'm not a Bush family rabid fan, but I will defend G Bush against the enormous mischaracterization done him for 6 years in the national media and private conversations. And I will always think that if Bush was wrong in Iraq, he at least had courage to confront something most people just wish would all go away- like a TV program they don't like anymore.

Oh, and the wallet being safer? Nope. The Republicans spent too damn much money, but it is the Dems who will allow the tax cuts to expire and therefore taxes rise. Historically when tax rates climb, revenue to the Government goes down. And under Reagan, which is the other Republican President in your comment, he made a deal with Congress that they would not increase spending as he went ahead with his own plans. They broke the deal. Naw, it all just twists and turns. My old man thinks we've not been out of debt, truly out, since WWll. He may be right. Lyndon Johnson retired, sickened by what he'd helped begin in the Great Society plan; which means 'spend more money' on poor and problems so they will just go away.
