Rumor of KA-BAR going chinese??

obviously inferior quality

I asked a Chinese manufacturer's rep why China sent so many low-quality products to the U.S. He answered with a question of his own: "Why do you buy so many shoddy goods?"

China manufacturers some goods to world-class standards.

We have met the enemy and he is us.

I just don't believe Kabar would do that to us.
Part of why they are one of my most favorite companies.
Well, that and the awsome products/quality/customer service/warranty... ;)

Obviously way OT.

But at the same time, some damn nice food for thoughts.

The reason most Wal-Mart's don't carry KA-BAR is because we won't sell direct to them. The limited amount of KA-BAR products Wal-Mart carries (mostly online) are purchased through third party distributors.

As for the China rumor, it is quite the contrary. We have moved over 10% of our production back to the USA in the last three years, bringing our USA production to around 80%. Most of our new items will be made in the USA. Our outstanding friends in this community as well as all over the world have made this possible and we expect to continue to grow our USA-made product line.

After one thread today regarding a poor customer service complaint involving a different manufacturer got locked down, i have to say I'm once again impressed by Kabar's responses to consumers on this forum. I've always believed that if you have something good to say about someone you should just say it. Nicely done Kabar, nicely done. It's responses like this that make me happy that I own more Beckers than any other brand.

Thank you.

Yes actually our walmart does carry firearm ammunition it is in staunton va. they also sell rifles. and as to people who may have thought i made things up, what would my reason be for this. I was inquiring simply because I found it hard to believe as well. Wasnt sure if it was true or not. But now, thanks to original ka-bar and a few other posters i guess i know the truth, therefor my post was successful in providing me with the answers i needed

I realize the demand for certain ammo atm. But our walmart has had them recently. I would call or check out walmart's website. Idk how much but they did have small boxes last week. But this particular post was meant to talk about that rumor, now cleared up. Not to scrutinize a miniscule detail of another comment I made earlier. Attempting to discredit my posts and any further posts I may make. I am not a "troll" nor a liar. I was stating what I was doing there and what the clerk, clearly misunderstood, had told me. Just to clear this up.

Excellent post. Says it all to me. Thanks for that.

Too bad they won't / can't reprint Walt Kelly's Pogo. Walt really hit the various nails on their heads frequently.

s1rlun5 - I think you mistook the comment as being directed at you and your truthfulness. I've made similar comments on occasion. It is a reference to the common observation that the ammo is always "all gone" by the time regular folks show up. The hoarders are there first thing after a shipment comes in and they are waiting for it to be put out. Down here in central Texas the wally worlds are out of 22 ammo by 8:30 a.m. when they get it, most of the time. I honestly have not seen a box of 22s on a WW shelf in over a year because I seldom get there before 5pm.

The Academy Sports and Outdoors stores have been limiting folks to 1 box per caliber of most popular calibers for months. They implemented that policy because people would rake the entire shelf of boxed ammo off into a cart. They chose to piss off the hoarders and have some ammo for more folks, although not as much as they would like to buy.

As to the question of Kabar heading to China, the answer is "HELL NO!!!"

If they did, I'd be over at the Kershaw forum, looking for a job.

Like Official KA-BAR said, they are moving their knives, BACK to the US.

Looks like I'll still have a job here after all.....

KaBar, keeping it real.

rumors: 0

apparently walmart does carry the bear grylls stuff :)

they also carry fiskars! but then, most quality stores do - i even noticed that fiskars tried the chinese (maybe taiwanese) experiment), didn't like the quality, and moved back to their home production with many things.

I haven't heard of KA-BAR doing this, but I'm pretty sure KA-BAR would do no such thing. KA-BAR is an American classic, and hopefully, always stay that way.

The only concern I have with Taiwanese made products, knives included, is the guilt by association with its monstrously looming big brother China. Chinese manufactured products are probably as poorly manufactured using sub-standard materials as were the made in Japan products of the 1950's. To add insult to injury, there is a huge market of fake name brand products that are primarily, if not all, manufactured in China. Taiwan, on the other hand, benefits from modern manufacturing facilities, and bends over backwards to please American businesses looking to manufacture quality goods at a more affordable cost. I received two Dozier folders from one of our MOD's, and the knives were manufactured in Taiwan. If they were made in China, I would not have been as impressed with what probably would have been obviously inferior quality.

Yes, this. But some of the Chinese made knives aren't bad for the price these days. The quality is improving. The same evolution occurred in Japan after WWII... initially pretty much junk, and now many rate their knives as good as US made and better in some cases.
