Hey Guys,

I'm interested in using 1 inch belts to grind my smaller knives and to grind swedges. I used to use a 1x30 and have always felt like I had much more control and precision when grinding small knives on a smaller belt. Grinding a 4inch blade on a 2in belt has never felt natural to me.

So here's my question, Can I cut down a 2in platen to 1in and run 1in belts on my KMG? Will they track consistently?

Thanks in advance!

For starters, I have never tried this but why not try cutting a 2 inch belt to 1 inch and running it over a 2 inch platen...you only need one edge of platen at a time. If it works out well then make a 1 inch platen. Larry

There is no reason why they wouldn't? I've used 1" belts on a 2" wide Platen, I just run it over to the side i want the plunge on.

I've bought 1" x 72, Cut them from 2" and I've had them made with the feather cut edges for finishing.

Over a period of time I've used quite a few 1"X 72" belts on a 2" X 72".I just moved but used to for sure have some of many sizes on hand at all times.Grinding inside curves can become a lot easier to do. I used to build up the center of the 2"wide 10" wheel at the center with about 20 layers of 1" masking tape for the 1" belt to ride on.

it will work fine, at least my grinder does (has domed tracking wheel an drive wheel). I made a 1" wide platen w/ fireplace glass on it and it's perfect. In fact, I am thinking about going even smaller for tight stuff.
