Thinking about purchasing a neck knife from Running Dog Knives. Wondering about the type of steel (15n20 Swedish Bandsaw)and if anyone
has some experience and comments about the company and their knives.
Thanks for the input.

I had a loan of one of his small neck knives, the "Traditional Tanto", awhile ago and was pleased with its performance. The grip was very comfortable for a partial length handle and very secure due to the cord wrap. The knife had a very thin edge with a full height flat grind and thus would cut very well on both shallow and deep cuts through all manner of materials. The sheath was well formed from Kydex, no rough edges, it held the blade well and the draw was easy via a thumb push.

The only obvious change I would make is remove the guard. With a grip this secure it is not really necessary and it reduces functionality by preventing the entire edge to be flat against the material being cut, and as well hinders some grips. A minor change would also be to remove the notch in the choil area so as to allow a smoother cut, David Boye grinds his blades in this manner for example. I would also personally like a thinner edge but there are durablity concerns once you start going past a certain level.

I had no problems with edge retention with the steel, nor in sharpening it. You are not going to get the same level of performance as you would with ATS-34 with low stress cutting, but you are not going to be constantly sharpening the blade. And as well, considering the high toughness and ductility of 15n20, you have some protection in regards to accidental high stresses. The only real downside to the steel is that it will rust very quickly, and for example can take a patina in minutes if exposed to fruit acids so I don't think it would respond well to long term exposure to salt water for example.

The price is also very low considering the level of the product. I will be getting a custom from him with the above modifications. Reference :

I have a R.D. Personal Tanto and I really like it alot. Like Cliff said they handle nice. It's sharp as Hell and I have to say the Kydex sheath has to be the best I ever had the Pleasure of using. you can't go wrong with owning one!

I have two from Running Dog. One is a Lil Pup, which is a great small knife. It's in my EDC rotation when I don't want any attention. It's black blade and sheath on my wide black belt, make it almost invisible. It can be carried as a neck rig as well. The other is a one-off called the BatWing and I use it almost everyday at work. It's about twice as long as the Pup, most of which is a longer handle with wood slabs.

Of all my knife purchases this year, which include; BM830S, MadDog Freq Flyer, a Woo, and a Pikuni, my little Running Dogs have given the most enjoyment and service. I will NEVER let these two escape my Tribe of Steel.

Hard to beat Running Dog neck knives in terms of overall bang for the buck. Fit and finish on both the knives and sheaths are top notch.

I have the the new Featherweight of 1/16" 15n20 steel with micarta handle. Very comfortable and light to carry. Good utility knife but, as noted, stains very easily.

I have also have Running Dog's proto BG42 lil pup and Bg42 Jr. Executives. These are great users. With 1/8" thick stock they are also s****ier and can take a little more abuse.

Running Dog does carry stainless, is looking at talonite, and is willing to put on handle slabs of various materials on request.

I don't think you can go wrong. :) ALso, do a search in Custom and knife Review forums. You should find a lot of info on Running Dog knives.

I have 2 R.D. knives - the Happy Camper in 1095, and the Maverick in 1084. They have become my 2 favorite using knives. The black Moly coat is very uniform and thick, and the kydex, as mentioned above, is some of the best I've ever seen (to include really good kydex pistol holsters ala BladeTech, SideArmor, etc.).

I'm no where near being any kind of knife expert, so I'll just say these 2 knives cut everythying I want to cut, and cut it well. I'm a fan of the "asymetric chisel grind" (chisel grind with secondary bevel on both sides).

Michael Murphy is a pleasure to do business with - prompt response to emails, and prompt delivery.

As a repeat customer, I'd highly recommend them...

Hey, what's up with the censor function? All I wrote was "s-t-u-r-d-i-e-r." Geeze, this program is trying to censor "T-U-R-D" or something. :(

I've been really happy w/ the Jr. Executive in BG42 & stag- it disappears on the hip w/ the multi-carry system & cuts really well (for the limited use it's seen).

Love my Pup in BG-42. A while back, a group of forumites badgered Mike into making a run of BG-42 Pups, Mike came through and they are really sweet knives.

Since other words go "thru" the editor/suppressor, can only guess that Spark had too much of the frequent phrase used to describe the Sebenza's appearance. So, both sturdier and Saturday get asterisked.

Well, guess it has been fixed. Hope Spark takes no offense. I know that many people have expressed concern about those two words being censored. Looks like Spark came thru! Thanks, Spark!
