Anyone else like to run in the winter? I love it. I've only ran in the snow a few times and it was awesome. Yes, I'm in Florida; but it was 28 degrees this morning and it felt great. I ran/walked 4 miles after work too. the temp was 42, so I ran in shorts instead of pants. I hate running in pants, but sub-40's without pants makes my knees ache.

OK, let me rephrase:

If the temp won't kill you, who likes running in winter?

I like running in cooler temps mid 40's and up. Right now it's treadmill season for me, I sweat way to much to be running in -10 degree weather.

I like to run in all seasons. Winter runs are exilerating IMO. I also still mtn bike when I can. I like to ride trails when the ground is froze. No bugs, and you do less damage to the trails.

Love it. Days like the below pic only happen once or twice a year where I live. However, I regularly run 6-15 miles in as low as 25 deg F. As long as the wind is not blowing too hard, you warm up quick. I know it's not cold to a lot you folks, though. Actually, this reminds me of a thread I need to start..

I never enjoyed running but there was a time when I had no choice in the matter. ;) We couldn't be made to run outside if it was below 17° (IIRC)....but that just meant we had to run inside. Since I couldn't stand that I always chose to go outside and deal with the weather. I also Hashed in cold weather and snow but I don't really consider that running.

When it was cold my gear consisted of a stocking hat, gloves, a GoreTex jacket over a t-shirt and shorts. I've ran in temps as low as -4° F outfitted like that.

Running in this?

Nuts to that! ;)

Seriously, though - Toronto has a core of insanely dedicated runners who hit the streets weather-be-damned, wearing the latest and greatest form-hugging thermal jogging gear. I envy their tenacity. Personally speaking, I find that I slip too easily when I'm running on icy sidewalks in the winter.

However, MEC now carries a line of snowshoes built for off-trail winter jogging, and I have been contemplating getting into this. There are plenty of fields up north that would make for some interesting and varied snowshoe-jogging.

All the best,

- Mike

my knees wont allow me to run anymore...i can walk forever though!

i remember running in south dakota for track practice and it was so cold it hurt my insides :(

I have run down a few hilly trails in the snow. It is alot of fun!!

till you fall.:o

Funny, I was thinking of going on my first winter run tomorrow. I did just come back in from a short hike tonight. It's 13 degree's out there right now. I had ice hanging off my beard.

I run year-round. Of course, it rarely drops below about 28 degrees here; typical winter mornings are about 35 with dense fog (like when I was running this morning). I just wear shorts and a long-sleeved cotton T-shirt.

Sorry, but I store up fat just before winter, and then I live off of it for 2 months. I can't afford to burn those calories ;)

I'll hike for hours on end but it takes proof (in some cases assumption will do) of live rounds or my daughter having some sort of "uh-oh" to get me to run anymore. One too many accidents makes running ...not so much fun anymore

I've run in -30C a few times. It's certainly interesting. I much prefer shorts weather, which for me goes down to about -5C. After that I need pants. At -30 I feel like an astronaut going on a spacewalk!

I've read of people using short hex-head machine screws screwed right up into their soles for winter traction (the hex-head provides the cleat, the pointy end of the screw points at your feet), but I use Nike Air's and I don't want to bust all of the air bladders. Today was fun - I'm fine on hard-pack like on the main trail today or the 6 inch compacted crusty snow that was off trail today. Shallow powder more like running in sand, deep power begins to get difficult and plain ice or icy slush are the slickest surfaces so I try to avoid them. Old man winter is on his way back though; the high Thurs is forecasted for 8 deg F so I'll stay indoors on the treadmill or stationary bike that day, although I'll probably ride my bike to work (which isn't much of exercise).

Yeah, I run year round too. Layer up, baclava and hat, gloves and shorten my stride in snow and ice and I'm good to go.

I like winter running better than july when it's 90+and humid! Not to say when it's below 0 and the wind is blasting I don't rethink my fitness plan though! :)

I had to give up running due to crap knees.
I was one of those idiots that thought football was great.
I swim, fast, about 1/4 mile two or three times a week instead.

mcjhrobinson,

Did the pack arrive? If not, you should be getting it soon.
