Have a new Beaumont KMG.

Curious about a Fenner PowerTwist vs. regular drive belt.

Nickel test were performed with nickel sitting on tool arm 1" out from arm receiver.

Initially set up with A23 stock drive belt:
Ran smooth, somewhat louder than I had hoped for.
Did nickel test - nickel stayed upright 10 to 15 seconds @ 50% speed
Hard to install.

Changed to AX23 cogged drive belt:
Ran smooth, quieter than A23.
Did nickel test - nickel stayed upright through speed changes, never fell regardless of speed.
Easier to install.

Changed to Fenner PowerTwist:
Ran "very" smooth, much quieter (more of a hum) than AX23.
Did nickel test - again, nickel stayed upright through speed changes, never fell regardless of speed.
Very easy to install.

After my "simple" test I have determined that I have a very solid well built grinder.

Beyond minor vibration & noise difference belt choice does not seem like a big deal.

I'm sure this grinder would do it's job with a rolled leg off of a pair of pantyhose. (No I did not try it)

But I do admit, I like the quieter operating PowerTwist better. (I will probably be about 30' from my neighbors door when using the grinder.) :):)

See many options from Fenner's - Which version did you buy?

I have run both on my KMG grinders and I agree the power twist do run quiet. But when I upgraded the one KMG with the 6 inch drive wheel and a 3 hp motor that was mounted on a hinged plate, I went back to a top grade V belt. The pressure of the heavy 3 hp motor against the the power twist belt caused the belt to wear quickly. This did not effect the standard V belt in the same manner.
I do run the power twist on all my drill presses and buffing machines with good success.

The link belt also allows you to get the length right if you are mounting the motor first. If you were to mount it under the grinder, 2 small holes is all you would need to pass the belt through. With a solid v belt, you would need to cut a slot.

PT Doc, never thought of that . . . might be handy if someone needed a guard to satisfy the insurance guy.

Fred, I have a table saw with a 2 HP single phase motor hanging on a link belt with no problems. But it only sees a few minutes of use a "WEEK" . . . :-)

I can tell you that an AX belt which is cogged is quieter/smoother and just as sturdy as a regular V-Belt.

I mounted my motor on urethane vibration isolators to get rid of some of the motor hum.
