Runt: Mid Tech version

Got the Hiking Buddy a day sooner than USPS figured on, ;) always a pleasant surprise !

The knife is great, very well made and again the handle provides nice contour and control of the knife.

Now this I am guessing may have been from an initial batch as the sharpness of the blade was in need of a good sharpening. After about 1/2 hour on my sharpening stones, going from 120 grit to 8k on my Shapton, she be very keen now! I mention this only as there may be some others that were sent out after the crew started their new method of sharpening, as the Runt arrived quite sharp out of the box. But in any case, it's not a bad thing that you might need to apply your own edge, as you will be the guy or gal that needs to maintain that knife to keep it sharp over the years to come.

Between this and the Runt, I'm not sure which I like better, but I like them both! The Runt will suit the office environment easier than the Hiking Buddy but the longer blade and handle on the HB is nice to have at hand too. I'll see how this all works out :)

Thanks Andy and Fiddleback Forge crew, nice job guys and gals !

Came out pretty good, on both knives. I just have a dremel and ordered a router table you can put the dremel into and that's what I did to route the slots in the scales, mask and vacuum to keep that bad dust out of me! I'm not a machinist, and wouldn't like doing this all the time, at least with this equipment ;)

The first diamond knot on the Runt is closer to the handle than the Hiking Buddy's, as I wanted it to be an extension of the handle so I wanted it close.

Thanks, decided to hang on to both the Runt and Hiking Buddy, both excellent knives!!!

I'd love to get a Mid Tech Camp knife but looks like it may be a while before they are available and also before I have coin to purchase one :(

Thanks Vance, it is a very handy mod, I've had some people ask if I'd be willing to do this to their knife and I'm not setup to take on orders like that, but maybe that's something Andy's crew could do?

Here's a short video I made of this knife;

G2,
Very nice video. Love seeing how sharp the knife is. "My wife hates when I do this to her phone book." Great line. Thanks for sharing.

haha indeed she does! I remember sharpening a bunch of knives for the guys at work one year just before hunting season, every stalk of hair on my left arm, from shoulder to knuckle was GONE, totally bare, even down into the groove along the side of the forearm muscle ;)

She didn't notice until I happened to cross my arms and boy did I get an earful !!! I had to promise never to do that again, and I've held that promise, I've never removed ALL the hair at any one time on that arm since :)

Of course my standard answer to her is " I have a constitutional right to Bare Arms !" but, it doesn't sway her view of that one iota...

Most of the guys in the shop are missing patches of hair on their arms and legs.
Looks like an outbreak of mange
Lol

I can imagine! people at work just shake their head, they don't understand that a knife can actually get that sharp!

A word of warning to those that may attempt to do the lanyard modification, that is HARDENED steel and you will need a very sharp carbide drill in order to get through it, I'd recommend going with a 3/16" to help make it easier to get the paracord through.

Andy, that would be great to at least have the hole in place to start with, and have the option of getting the handles milled out if folks want that.

The scales, those proved to be more difficult, a router is good but we're dealing with an odd shaped handle, a mill is better, and screwing down the handle, gently, onto a block of wood helps to keep the handle stable as you route out the groove.

Thanks JB, one word about cutting down through that phone book, the background is a square piece of floor tiling that I use sometimes for knife photos and or videos, so when I was getting down to the very last page/cover of the book, I was trying to be careful not to slice the whole way down into the tile, only have that one style and hate to ruin it ;) so I gently made the knife go the final part trying to hold it back from cutting too deep.

Nice job on the lanyard. Just a thought regarding a similar mod on a larger knife like a Bushfinger. Having a small amount of exposed tang at the Butt might make for an efficient glass breaker.
