I've been consciously working toward getting a few working knives in the rotation from some of the makers I have worked closely with over the years. Russ is one of those makers from whom I have purchased many knives in the past, but never really put one through its paces.

Blame him for making them so pretty and finishing them so perfectly!

Anyway, I had mentioned this very thing to Russ, and he in turn mentioned he'd been wanting to make a working integral camp knife, with a design based on an old Phillipine knife he'd once had. He suggested that he might take a crack at pounding one out - keep it at a working level finish - then send it to me to get beat on good and hard and get some feedback on the design. Might I be interested?

Um, YES!

Russ sent me a sketch of the basic design so I would have an idea of what to expect:

And the real deal arrived in the mail just last week:

Sweet.

It's about a 9 1/2" of blade, 15 1/4" OAL. The blade is some wickedly sharp Cru Forge V, with a wrought iron spacer and African Blackwood handle.

Initial impressions: this thing is going to be some serious fun. Some good mass to the blade without being overly heavy, and the subtle contouring of the handle makes for a very comfortable grip. I like the fact that there is enough handle that you can kep your hand entirely on wood, without having to choke up onto the metal spacer / integral bolster. This knife feels like it's going to bite - deep.

It will probably be a month before I get down to Dan's for some trail clearing and chopping-stuff-'cause-it's-fun action, and this knife will make the wait even longer. Can't wait to get to know this one on a whole other level.

Roger,

That is a knife that looks like it can do alot of chopping. It looks like a comfortable handle shape.

Have fun!

Russ's "hard-core working grade" is 16.9 times nicer than most everyone else' VERY BEST work.

AWESOME knife Russ and Roger!!!

Roger first off I love the blade should do everything and then some

secondly I love to see top makers and collectors doing user knives

Bravo Gentleman

As long as ther are folks like you the true art of the blade will never die

Roger,

You will need to actually go camping and give us a field report.

Great knife!

One of the hopes in designing this piece was that the handle would lay
easy in Roger's hand, and still be controlable even/especially when the
hand gets tired.
The blade spine is nearly 3/8ths of an inch thick near the bolsters, and
only about 3/16" thick at the widest part so as to "feel" light though still
having enough mass for chopping.
I'm sure there will be some design improvements as a result of field work,
and am really looking forward to that...

I am having serious knife envy right now

Thanks gents.

Lorien - I knew this one would appeal to you. You too, Hans - it reminds me a bit of that sweet stag camp knife you have from Russ.

Peter - field report will come, and I'll add it in here a few weeks down the road.

Joe - thanks my man.

Roger

Just an awesome camp knife design! It looks like it will be super comfortable in hand. Anxious to hear the field report.

I have always wanted to get ahold of one of Russ' Bison camp knives...now there are two of Russ' camp designs I would like to handle at some point.

I am sure it was hard for Russ to do a 'working level finish'!

Great get, Roger. Test it well!

- Joe
