Russian Masterpieces

Do you know if the Russian makers typically carve or cast the more decorative sculptural elements?

Gabe, I'm only making an educated guess here but I think they mainly carve.

In this picture, why is the background from Starcraft? What does the knife have to do with the Blizzard game, Starcraft? The picture is of a Zerg Hydralisk unit.

I'm not sure, I didn't make the picture...so you have to ask the maker Gennady Sokolov. The knife is called: "Nightmare on a stuffy summer night" and I'm guessing when I look at the knife that he drew some inspiration from the game you mentioned.

A real visual treat here - thanks Marcel. Some very beautiful and exceedingly complex pieces by some (obviously) VERY talented makers.
I agree with Joss - I would love to see more knives from other countries and cultures.

The upcoming BLADE Show might be a good place to meet some Russian makers and see their work up close. I met several Russian makers last year at BLADE as they brought their pieces in for photography. All the pieces I examined were of good to excellent quality and very artistic in nature. We couldn't communicate in much detail or nuance but one thing stood out in a very positive way - they were super excited and happy to be there.

I always enjoy admiring the Russian masters. I have a few of the Yearly Guild catalogs, and the work (and photography) is off-the-charts.

Funny, I have been working with a gentleman (Jim Kane) who will be an importer of Russian knives to the US. He has sent me a number of pieces to photograph for his pending website (Cossack Blades LLC.) The website isn't up yet, but I finished these THIS week.

Let's see:

Of course these are not Russian Knife Guild museum quality pieces, but still nicely honorable, nonetheless. Those are yellow (?) diamonds in the eyes, and silver fittings.

(BTW -- that Cougar ebony-handled knife has an incredibly good feel in the hand. Those scallops register the fingers, while the round upper handle is smooth to the palm. Deceptively functional.)

Here's some users:

Thanks, Marcel.

Boy, almost every knife shown does it for me. The photography in this thread, between Coop and those from the Russian guys, is so damn cool... Very nice post Marcel... Best, Rich
