I am placing a flipper order from a Russian knifemaker (Cheburkov) and for the model I am looking at there are 3 steel types: M390, stainless damascus and a laminated stainless. I am familiar with the performance of the M390 but not of the last two (I'm assuming) Russian steels. Can anyone speak to their performance and give a recommendation?

m390 would be the best performing of the three for edge retention. being that its a flipper pocket knife, thats the best option. if you want it to look good choose the damascus, or laminated stainless as they are stainless, i dont think you will have to keep the blade oiled. they will look great but not perform as well as m390.

Here look for yourself. Before this test on wood the guy cut cardboard and it did really well. After he cut some wood and got it to chip.
He explains it's due to how hard their m390 is compared to other brands. He wouldn't put such an acute angle on it knowing this. And overall it's just harder to sharpen properly due to this high hardness. He would also use different abrasives to sharpen it but adds that not many people are going to have those laying around and is just added difficulty.
So again this is for people who get this and try to throw 15dps cuz it's high end steel.
