Russian ushanka for the cold?

I use the Norwegian Army one, Cheaper Than Dirt has them sometimes. It has fold down, inside the hat, ear flaps for milder weather and when it gets really cold, you can use the flaps tied up on the outside of the hat. It also has a flap that folds down over you forehead and you can bend the front flap down to shield your eyes from snow or sunlight. It was almost (so I am told) adopted by our USMC, who used it on exercise in Norway. The Marines asked the Norwegians how they had designed the pile cap and got blank looks and were told "We copied yours". Turns out there was a Norwegian MASH unit in Korea during the war that was issued the US pile cap, they slightly modified it and have used it ever since. The ability to use the front flap to shield your eyes makes it more useful than either the Russian or Finnish caps.

I only usually use one of these Russian Issue to keep warm at night:

Hey you Talfuchre,,, This is a commi bed warmer. No stinking capitalist may share one of those *L* ... LOL

I think they rock the house.

I also don't think they're so warm as to be unusable unless it's super cold -- so long as you don't put the ear flaps down -- THEN they get HOT unless it's well below freezing.

Alright dude, I'm sigging that.

I have to ask, based on your pics of her, and her apparent aversion to apparel. . .was she wearing anything else?

Hello?.....Links?

I've got one I bought in St. Petersberg (was Leningrad then) in 1988. Great hat but I haven't worn it in a while do to sentimental value.

Most of the ones given to the regular soldiers were fake fur. They would be o.k but for real cold they are not as warm and you would sweat more in them as they dont breath as well.. One of the reason my mom wanted the best she could get. I would say get the real fur. Unless you live in Alaska get the rabbit fur one.
