Rust along the knife edge

I grabbed one of my favourite blades out of storage and discovered small specks of what I assume is rust along the cutting edge. I tried the toothpaste trick but it didn't do anything. I'm planning on picking up Bar Keeper's Friend or Flitz tomorrow, but if you have any tips/tricks I can try before then please let me know. Money is tight and I'd rather use something I already have at home.

(The steel is S45VN and it's stonewashed FYI)

There is a product called C L R calcium lime rust remover. Shouldnt be to expensive and you can soak it in that to get it off.

I am surprised S45VN rusted while being stored though. What are you using while it sits? Might be time to try something else

Could be contamination from whatever they used to sharpen it. Also if it's a rough edge it creates ideal circumstances for rust formation. I've had small specks appear on S30V out of nowhere. On close inspection the specks formed inside the scratches from the machine used to grind the bevels. It was quite surprising, as I have knives with M4, K390 and Maxamet and I've had zero rust on them. I can't think of any other reason than contamination being the reason. I used my strop to remove the specks, it took minimal effort, and I haven't had issues since (I've had this manix for close to a a decade now).

PS: If the knife was stored in a leather sheath, the chemicals used in processing the leather can cause corrosion.

Ahh makes sense. Usually for me it is my sweaty, acidic skin causing rust 😅
