if the edge is sharp, steel wool will remove the rust and not the edge. That and some good ole kitchen based canola oil on the edge will keep it from rusting.
It is normal to get rust in stored knives on exposed parts, inside a sheath. There are many good rust preventatives at the local store if you are willing to spend some cash.
