Sorry If I brought up an old topic. Moderators please delete the thead if necessary, I couldn't find one with the same subject. :D

So anyway, the question is, does the leather factor in when it comes to rust issues on multi's (for all tools/knives for that matter). Especially for different climates and/or weather conditions.

I've heard that the tanning process for leather can cause rust to build up rather more quickly than nylon sheaths if at all. And I would gladly assume that kydex/polymer/plastic sheaths don't factor in at all.

I'd love to hear the expert opinions on this.

Hello,

SOG's instructions warn about the tannic acid in wet sheaths and recommend storing the tool and sheath apart.

Hi JoeBW

So I guess from a manufacturers' instructions we can surmise that Leather Sheaths do make rust sit more quickly on the tools/knives. Especially in wet weather or wet conditions. Dang, and I live in a tropical climate too. Just my luck.

Any more who've had similar experience or observations?

I remove knives from leather sheaths for long term storage. Alternatively, I wrap the knives in non acidic paper to insulate them from the leather during storage. The brass parts of some of my knives corroded before I started this practice.

If the knife is used often, corrosion is not as much a problem.

I find that knives rust and tarnish quicker in leather than in nylon.
And leather, once wet, takes longer to dry than nylon.

Good luck,
Allen

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess correctly that its time I get a nylon sheath for my LM-Surge. I'm already beginning to notice some tarnishing on the blades, and rainy season's about to start here. :(

This cinches it for me. Out with the leather. In with the Nylon.
( hmmmmm, I wonder if I can find a kydex/polymer mag pouch that'll fit a Surge? ):D

Thanks again to all replies and to Blade Forums!
