Rust on inside of scale

Hey Everyone. I took apart my large micarta today to clean it since it felt a bit gritty. Lo and behold there was rust stain on the titanium between the large washer and the slab. It's no big deal, but what I'm confused about is how it got there in the first place. The blade looks perfect and the washers don't rust, so what caused it? Any ideas?

Thanks.

Titanium cannot rust. Maybe something else? Try scrubbing it down with some soap and hot water.

That's exactly why I'm confused. The blade doesn't have a spot on it. I haven't tried to clean it yet but I'll try that first. Thanks.

is it possible the cloth or surface used to wipe down or set the knife during the last cleaning had some sort of high iron dust residue? or maybe it settled in there from some time when using it around a place with that dust in the air? also maybe its not rust.

Titanium can corrode through galvanic corrision. Likely it's a stain, like you're saying. It's probably a stain from the washer. Try rubbing alcohol on the titanium. If that doesn't work, try windex, that stuff cleans titanium very well.

My Kershaw skyline has the same problem but I have no idea how to clean it. Someone told me WD-40 was a good idea, and that's usually what I use to clean it so...
Any help?

I'm willing to bet it just a stain from the Pb washer rubbing on the scale. It could also just be contamination of some sort.

I guess it could have been anything. It certainly looked like rust but who knows. Anyways, I used my tuf-cloth and with a bit of rubbing it came right off. Good news is that the knife seems to get smoother with each cleaning! Thanks everyone for the feedback.

It's the bronze washer rubbing. If not tightened down all the way, it will sometimes spin. I have bought alot of pre-owned sebenzas and see this frequently. It's definitely not rust though. It is orangish in color though and can certainly give that impression. Once cleaned thoroughly, tightened and lubed correctly, your unlikely to see it again.

That makes perfect sense to me. Thanks!
