Rust preventative for storage, help!

Dry enclosed place, coat of mineral oil and silica packets (moisture trap).

For long term I prefer to use a thicker material with more “grab”. I use McQueen’s brand tallow. It’s marketed as a skin care product but is pretty much tallow + preservatives to keep from going rancid.

It has a consitancy right in the middle of bees wax and petroleum jelly. It really clings onto the steel and isn’t going to roll off or change from temperatures like something like coconut oil would.

As for how non-toxic it is, I’m not very sure. It’s designed for you skin so I’d imagine not the best thing to have on your food, yet it is based from sheep fat. If food safe is your 100% priority then better off with something like mineral oil.

Would petroleum jelly work if that was all that was available?

I don't know what "long term" is for you, but mine sit for 6mos-1yr sometimes. I use a light application of regular gun oil, and put the in a snack ziplock, or in their baggie, and box. I store them in large rolling, 3 drawer, Sterilite containers. No rust yet.:)
Yep I use a light coat of gun oil also and it seems to work great.

I personally would just use gun oil and check the knife about every month or so. If I want to keep a knife perfect stored, I use Renaissance Wax. I believe any of the Canauba (sp?, not sure) wax products would work well.

Hey guys,

What do you guys use for rust prevention for long term storage? Preferably not toxic.

I have been using frog lube and have recently found it lacking on non stainless blades.

First coat the blade with whatever oil/wax/product makes you happy. Then buy/borrow a food saver machine. Use the roll of bag material to cut an appropriate size bag and then seal the knife inside with the air pumped out. For extra protection include some desiccant (silica gel) in with the knife. No oxygen, no water vapor, no rust. I store bags of 3 to 4 knives in my safe in these vacuum sealed bags. In fact, because I've had some nasty and expensive corrosion issues, I double bag it. I put the vacuum sealed bag in a second bag and vacuum seal that. If you use a roll (instead of pre-cut bags) you can make it fit anything, even a sword. The bags are one-time-use only. Once you cut one open you have to start all over if you want to put the knife back into storage. For my folding knives that I'm likely to use more often I bought a clear plastic food-saver container. Even a small one can store 4 to 6 folders along with silica gel. The machine pumps out the air and they can stay like that for months (years) until I break the seal and open the lid.

I don't and never have used it, but you should look into that EDCI Solution stuff.

Cosmoline. :)

Yuk.... Cosmoline.... Protecting your knife with hazardous material and it becomes an ugly yellowish gunk with time...

But I think you where kidding, right ?

I second the renaissance wax or any kind of wax that is. I have swords coated with paraffin and after many years there is no sign of corrosion.

Not sure about the non toxic part, although I would think washing good with soap and hot water before using with food and any of these would be ok.
I have used Ren. Wax with excellent results for periods of several years in a constant temperature environment.
I have used Rig gun grease on bone or stag knives with fine results. Probably would avoid synthetic handles.
Eezox works good, but keep it off plastic handles.

I've had luck with Ballistol on the blade and Zerust pack in the case with them.
