Rust prevention experiment

I'm going to do a rust prevention experiment and I need help locating some of the sprays and goos and oils I want to compare.

Here's what I'm going to do:

1. Buy some drill rod and cut it into several identical pieces.
2. Coat each piece in something different.
3. Hang the pieces in my extremely damp basement and see which remains rust free the longest.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 in other environments, such as: soaked in animal blood (from hamburger meat), sprayed with salt water, left in a tub of water, etc.

Does anybody know where I can get some Starrett M1? Other stuff planned so far is WD-40, thirty-weight motor oil, Popular Mechanics lubricant from wal-mart, tuff-cloth, Outers Gun Oil.

What else would you like me to try? If it's too exotic you'll have to send me some.

I'd like to see Rem Oil if you wouldn't mind.

That's my preferred choice for my knives.

Just happen to have some Rem Oil. Thanks for the reminder. I'd better look through my workshop and see what else is lurking there.

Hiya Uncle Bill!!!
Seems that you can get Starret M1 from the people at: http://www.iwentool.com/shopsupp.htm
FYI, here's a little search tip I stumbled onto....
When you need to find something, go to your favorite search engine, AltaVista, Yahoo, Hotbot, whatever, and enter the name of the thing your looking for in quotation marks.
I found the aforementioned (no, I am not a lawyer, I just read all of John Grisham's novels) link by going to AltaVista and entering : "Starret M1" in the place you enter the thing that you wanna find at.

Neato, amen't it?

Uncle Bill,

I've read several threads by folks who are concerned about using synthetic or petroleum based lubricants on knives that may see double duty in utility and food preparation roles. Some have advised that olive oil is a viable alternative as it won't contaminate food yet provides a reasonable degree of corrosion resistance. How about putting this theory to the test?

I don't suppose it matters if it's regular or extra-virgin oil

BreakFree still seems common so it's worth considering. Did you get mineral oil ? It'd also be nice to try to find people who make things rust rather quickly, such people exist as toolmakers use to test prospective apprentices for such problems, as it might explain some of the contradictory results that people have; this works great vs that stuff sucks. If you're going to use some of the cloth products try to get the cloth well broken in with normally oily, dirty and sweaty hands.

I use Birchwood Casey's Sheath on all of my guns and knives with good results. I would love to see how it fares in your test.

Thanks.

I've decided that if somebody has something they want to include in my experiment, they are welcome to send me a dab of it. If it's a paste, it could be sent in a 35mm film can; if liquid, something sealable and of very small size. Be sure to label it. E-mail me if you're interested in being part of this.

OK we've got people e-mailing me and lining up to send me . . . well you wouldn't believe what all. I'll have to close this pretty soon or I won't be able to buy enough drill rod. Get your e-mails to me quick!

Anybody want to send me a dab of otter lard?

I am sending RIG (Rust Inhibitive Grease) and X-1R Multi Use Grease.

No, I won't send you any Otter lard. What else would I fry the peacock eggs in?

I'm starting to get some of y'all's goos. Thanks, guys!

Hurry, if you want your stuff in the experiment. I won't start for a few more days, in case anybody else wants to play.

E-mail me so I'll know your stuff is coming.

if you have some handy, howzabout trying good ol' Turtle Wax?

Some old-timers swear by it.
