rust preventive test

Day 6. Crisco has spotting over the whole thing. For whatever reason both the frog lube and alpha clp, have rust forming along the tape, but other wise look good. Burts bees is looking the best so far. I few rain light rain showers the last couple days, and humid.

Day 9. I cleaned them all off with a paper towel last night, sprayed them with water, and left them sit over night. The alpha clp showed some spotting this morning. The frog lube, and Burts bees still looked the same. So they seem to still be working. Burts bees did the best this time, edging out frog lube. Frog lube seemed like it held up better than Burts bees when we had heavy rain. It's been dry the last week, just me spraying them every morning and evening.

I watched that. I also tried break free CLP, and Hoppes #9 oil. I haven't had any oil hold up after being exposed to rain. I think they're just getting washed off.

From what I've heard, steel parts need to sit in the Break Free CLP for a while for the best performance. I try to let my firearm parts sit in it for 24 hours.

I also haven't happened upon this thread in a while. Nice work man! You're doing a really good service to all of us and I sure appreciate it! I've been in a similar boat lately and commented early on in this thread that I've been experimenting with different products to keep corrosion down for long term knife storage (you never know what's going to happen in life and at any time you could have your knives sitting around unmaintained for however long. I recently bought some Renassaince Wax after several people recommending it to me. I'd be curious to see how it does up against what you're using. I'm going to remember the Burt's Bees thing, I always have some with me! It's funny, I've actually thought of using that before.

Renaissance Wax is kind of strange. The first day I got it I applied it to like 10 knives and let it dry for as long as it took me to apply to all 10 knives (Like 8 minutes). When I went to buff it off I noticed that when they say "it hardens instantly" they mean it. If you don't buff it off right away it will leave streaks showing how it was applied. I even took 97% iso alcohol and rubbed it off but it was still on there perfectly and still showed the streaks. Then I tried rubbing it off with acetone and it was still on the blades showing the streaks:oops:. Pretty crazy stuff. I have a feeling it's going to work good for corrosion prevention though.

I've never used Renaissance wax. I did try carnauba wax a while ago, it was rusting the next day. I also tried sizing die wax in the batch I have out now. It lasted for a couple of days. I went mad scientist and cooked up a home brew. It's doing well so far.

6 days in. Frog lube is showing some rust now. My homemade mix and Burts bees are hanging in there. Not really any rain all week. Just spraying them with water morning and evening. Hot and humid.

Nice man, yea please keep it going and post pics if you can (you can use imgur for that). I'm currently trying to find something that will keep corrosion and rust off and away from my knives while they are being stored for a while without use.

For long term storage crc sp400 is amazing. It is sprayable but dries to a waxy consistency. My job would spray freshly machined parts and store them outside, sometimes for months with no corrosion. The only downside is that removal is more involved than products offering less protection but for maximum protection in long term storage, it can't really be beat except for cosmoline.

Day 9. We had rain off and on all day yesterday. The sizing wax is looking bad. Frog lube is showing a fair amount of rust. My homemade brew looks to be just a little worse than Burts bees.

I worked for a Submarine company in Hawaii and we used Lanolin as a corrossion preventative on some of the valve actuators on the outside of the submarine. It did work pretty well but it smells pretty bad.
