maybe you guys can help me out. i'm trying to remove the rust and patina from some of my carbon steel blades and don't really know the best method in which to do so. any advice would help me out. thanks!!

any number of ways, depends on how bad ya wanna skin the cat?
personally my old knives arent supposed to look shiny and new
So i use just 000 steel wool and WD40
if its really rusty ive heard of people using a penny to scrap off the rust
then there is flitz or metal glo metal polish
of course theres sand paper, auto grade metal but thats a commitment and if the pitting is bad you may need to remove a whole bunch of material
