Rust wars! Blade coatings testing...

Aaron,
Once again I fear my wording (or lack of) is failing me - hope you didn't take my post in the wrong way. What I was, in fact, trying to say, is JUST what you just stated. It's entirely about 'horses for courses', if you will. Not trying to sway you in any direction. I use a variety of steels, and am constantly experimenting, despite not going to the lengths you do to present my testing online.

No worries mate!

As you said I think a lot of this stuff is a matter of personal preference and circumstance!

I will be very curious to see how the coatings perform, should be getting started with the testing before the end of the week! Going to be a busy few weeks for me, my new steel supplier is sending over the first batch of my new A2 steel today, exciting stuff!

Found the thread brother. I'll be watching for the results. This will be a fun one. You've done a great job laying it all out.

Nice Matt!

I should be doing the hardness testing and handle glue-ups today!

Anxious to see the test result's, and thanks for the shop tour a couple weeks back.
Some cpm m-4 with crn and dlc would be juicy.
You are getting some impressive performance out of your knives at 62.5 and .012 at the edge very cool.

No worries Joel, it was nice to meet you! Here's hoping I learn to weld someday :)

Looking forward to the results man! This will be nice to have independent testing of NIC industries tests. It will be great to find the best out there for all of us!

.
Cerakote cost is a little hard to figure, but doing it yourself requires a fair whack of cash up-front as you need a decent compressor, sandblasting cabinet, HVLP spray gun, and an oven to bake it on. Cost of the paint on a per-knife basis would only be a few dollars, but then the prep time adds a fair bit of labor cost to each. I would say that prepping a knife and spraying it with Cerakote takes me around 45-60 minutes for each knife when I'm working on a batch of 24. That includes all prep steps like sandblasting and so on.

Question, what air filter and dryer system do you have? It very important to the longevity of the cerakote that the air coming from the hvlp be dry and clean as anything less will cause premature failure. Just asking because I didn't see you post anything about it and I'm curious 😊

Keep up the good work!

Keep up the good work!

My compressor has quite a large tank (80 gallons), which means that it never actually runs while I'm spraying. That has a big impact because the air will have cooled from the day before and therefore dried out.

In addition to that I use disposable dessicant driers with a 5 micron filter right before the spray gun, seems to work very well!

The only time moisture is ever even slightly an issue for me is when I'm sandblasting. I plant to install and air cooler and a drier to tackle that early next year, but honestly it hasn't actually caused any issues because I use the dessicant driers for everything.
