Rust!!!!!!

Hi ya'll!

I went out on a light excursion today for a few hours. Had the 15" AK strapped to the side of my day pack. I got poured on a few times and some moisture snuck into the sheath. When I got home and began cleaning my gear I found a light patina of rust on my blade.

Does anyone have any tricks to keep this from happening again? I always try to keep it lightly oiled. Obviously there was no damage, just some light staining so it was really no big deal. It's just annoying. Most of my guns and knives are rust resistant due either to material or finish so I am not used to this rapidity of rusting. I guess I'll just have to step up my field maitanence schedule!

BTW Uncle Bill, I received my shop 2 BAS the other day and it looks great!! I have not yet had the opportunity to test it out. Perhaps tomarrow.

Tallwingedgoat, I too would like a copy of that newsclip. I would be happy to pay you for materials and postage. Please email me if this is possible.

Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike:

I know I will get flak for saying this but I have good luck with WD-40. I'm sure our resident experts will have better fixes than this so we will wait for their input.

If you got the scabbard wood soaked pretty good take the blade out and let the wood dry or else stick it in the oven at lowest setting until it dries out. If the leather shrinks after drying stick the knife into the scabbard until tightest point is encountered and let it stay that way for 24 to 48 hours.

Shop 2 have generally been getting good reviews. Keep us posted on yours.

Marine Tuf-Cloth. I have left my knives (including the khukuris) with crud still on them for a day or two and they have not rusted. The advantage to using oil though is that is eventually coats the inside of the sheath and you then start getting an automatic re-oiling whenever you sheath it. I just use both.

Jaeger,

I don't have any duplicating ability at my house. So what I'm going to do is send my copy to Bill, and everyone who wants it can get it from him. Like I said it's only a minute anyway.

Sometimes I wonder why Bill don't sell Gurkha documentaries along with his khukuris.

No, I was never lost. But I was mighty bewildered one time for three days.

In days of old, when knights were bold,
And Tuf-Cloth yet invented.
They wiped their sword with bars of lard,
And were quite contented.

I'd be interested as to how the Nepalese protected their blades. According to Bill they didn't even use sheaths

Daily use keeps the rust off pretty well. And since beauty is really not a consideration a little rust is acceptable. It takes quite a lot to degrade a blade.

Interestingly, Yangdu will still use olive oil on a blade and when that is not available a smearing of butter.

Corrosion-X. Amazing stuff, apply once every few days if the blade is in adverse conditions.

I am with Yangdu here.Petrol distillates will soften wood.We may not live to see it,however.
