I am using SKS5 carbon steel,i know carbon steel will rust, but when i sand it down to 1500 grit and polish i have not had a problem with rust, but when i take it down to just 600 grit, polish and put a little oil on it it will rust almost over nite.Is there something i can put on them to keep them from rusting so quick?
Thanks for any help,Keith

I have been working with high carbon steels (01, 1095, 1084, W2, W1, etc) for over 25 years and have never had this problem. What is SKS5 ?

Where are the blades stored, in a damp open air shop, in the house, closed shop with AC ???

SKS5 is a Japanese Steel, data for it can be found here
Seems to be a Japanese L6!

SKS5
Carbon 0.75-0.85
Silicon ≤0.35
Manganese ≤0.50
Phosphorus ≤0.030
Sulfer ≤0.030
Copper ≤0.25
Nickle 0.70-1.30
Chromium 0.20-0.50

Thanks Mr Don,SKS5 is out of some 60'' saw blades, which seems to hold an edge pretty well.I have always kept the knives in the house.I have always taken them down to 1500,but had someone that did not want that finish,so i went to 600 up till then never had a problem with rust.Just thought there may be something different than what i've used.

Thanks,Keith

I also use wax.

I made several thousand knives from saw blade steel, years ago and still never had any rust on blades that were laing around. Turn dark with use but never rust. And 320 to 600grit finishes. Don't know what your doing to cause rust, but you need to stop :D

Thanks Mr.Don for that bit of advice.I laugh as i read the end of your post, but you are right, and as soon as i find what it is,well,i think i'll stop it.But after thinking about it the only thing i've done different,is with the leather i have been using.I am by no means any good with leather, however,i can make a cover that looks like a sheath. The leather that i have always used is thin and more like suede. However the last that i bought was smaller pieces of heavy leather that was cheap and just right to practice with.Could it be the type of leather that i am now using?
