rust!!!

This one hurt my heart a little bit. (there isn't an appropriate smiley for that).

Thanks for taking the time to do this test - really interesting results - no huge surprises, but still really cool to see the results in action...

Watch the etched area on the salt - mine rusted there.

Put the pic in so I wouldn't get "Pics or it didn't happen..."

ive always had an aversion to oiling my blades. i suppose i could use a non-toxic like mineral oil, but i guess i dont want oil on my hands or clothes.

in any event, ive only experienced rust on a couple ocassions camping. both were busses that i had left out overnight and were covered in dew the next morning. rust appeared mostly around the talon hole and on the spine. it just wiped off each time.

last update:

a bit of rust on the s90v, after roughly 10 hours in the solution. it polished right out, no pitting, and it was only this spot.

it is semi-circular, right under the spyder logo.

vg10 is still clean, no signs of corrosion anywhere.

i was real curious to see if that area would rust. i actually left the atlantic overnight in the solution and took the others out.

no rust anywhere, not even the etched areas.

Is this test complete or still going? Working on a patina?

all finished. my conclusions:

1. cpmd2 pits quickly and rusts. granted the solution had a high salt content, but that was the point. i was surprised at how rapid the corrosion was. take care of your d2 blades, be sure to dry them off completely.

2. s90v will eventually rust, but after 10 hours or so, the one spot i did get rust doesn't mean much. i wouldn't be too concerned with this steel.

3. vg10 is very stain resistant. no spots or staining of any kind.

Some dewd told me he just would daily wipe his blades off and never had any rust.
He never used oil. Why would he lie?
Me---oil...a light coat.
Thanks, Ken.

Don't
A light coat of WD-40. It has NEVER failed.
The oil makes the blade look purdy too. :D

This brings me to what Phill Hartsfield told me in the 80's. "Even the stainless steels will rust. So, why not use tool steel, that cuts much better, and just keep it oiled?"
Wise words, Phill.

dont be sad, there is still plenty of life left in that one!

Oh, I'm ok, I recovered. And I know it's in good hands with you... but I'll admit, I had to look at mine just to see a clean blade. :D
