I am new to knives, so I am looking for some help.

My ESEE 5 and Laser Strike came in the mail today. My 5 had alot of rust on it. It was supposed to be new from a dealer.

I am not experienced with rusted knives and knife maintenance in general. Anyone know if I can fix this my self, or do I have to return the blade.

You should easily be able to polish that off with any metal polish. It also won't hurt anything as is. If you use it, and especially when you sharpen it it will be gone!

Welcome to the forum :).

That type of rust (surface rust, with no pitting. Meaning its basically just discoloration) on the edge is not a problem at all in my opinion. Simple use, or even just the first sharpening should take care of that no problem.

Enjoy the new steel :).

Just a little surface rust.
No big deal.
That knife might have been sitting in its box for years possibly.

Yup, like others have said, it is just a little discoloration on the edge. It is very common with higher carbon non stainless knives. All my Esee knives have had that at one point or another. You can polish it out or you can sharpen it out. Or you can do the most fun thing and use it out. After some use that stuff will be gone! Great looking knives. Enjoy them!

This will continue to happen with this carbon blade. If it bothers you, you can keep a sheen of mineral oil on the edge while its not in use. I like mineral oil as its cheap, and food safe if you think you might ever use it on food.

That kind of discoloration is fairly normal for ESEE (and all 1095 knives). You should use it and it won't be an issue at all.

Blade discoloration is the primary reason ESEE uses a coating on most of their blades.

i thinks its normal :D

Use it, sharpen it, or scrub it with some fine steel wool.

Welcome to the forums!

Rust Eraser works great on that. Its diamond dust in an eraser. Its fine grain so it won't mark the knife, but aggressive on rust. This type of rust will be an ongoing problem with these knives due to them being nonstainless. Also, to prevent it I *highly* recommend Frog Lube paste. You just rub it onto the steel areas of the blade (it does nothing to the coating). Unlike oil, which likes to migrate and wipe off, it absorbs into the steel and protects it for long periods of time and works excellent. Its also a USDA certified food product, so its totally safe to consume. Runs about $12 for a bottle that will last you forever. I work at a shop and its our best rust prevention product as well as our fastest selling knife care product.
PS - for the rust eraser, there are many brands and some are WAY better than most. I highly recommend "Super Eraser" brand. It can also be used to polish minor scratches on satin blades, but our main use for it is removing the steel off our ceramic sharpening rods. They're indespensible for that along with rust removal.

Not uncommon. We have seen that on some of the ESEE knives we have on display. A little WD-40 and a rag will take it right off.

It's defective. Any rust on a carbon steel knife, especially on the edge makes it unusable.

Send them to me. I'll give them a proper burial.

Tell me this thread is tongue in cheek????

I don't think so, considering the OP says clearly that he's new to knives.

When I was new to knives I sure as heck didn't know that surface rust wasn't really bad, it took reading and learning and asking questions. No one is a grandmaster of epic knife knowledge from the start, give him some slack.

That is one long slumbering knife.

Take it out, use it, abuse it, the rusts will be gone and the knife will thank you for it! We promise. ;)
