Rusted up my new bushfinger :(

Bit of a bonehead move in the kitchen tonight. I was using my bushfinger chopping veggies in a continued effort to build a patina. I cut a lemon in half, rinsed it off right away, but then let it sit for 20-30 min while we ate. This was the result:

Any tips on getting the dust off without scratching it up?

Thanks!

I've also found the hair of the dog that bit you works too.

Rub it with something acidic.

I like hot vinegar. Coat it, let it darken, rub off, repeat.

You may even be able to rub it off with your thumb, or a wet cloth. I did that to mine in a small patch with a lemon while trying to build a patina - it came off fine.

Flitz would polish that right out if those things don't work. You may have to touch up the edge afterward though as the rust is kind of close. You will have to start your patina project over as well :)

I tried scrubbing pretty hard with a plastic scrub pad and a scotch brite par with some soap. The pics were after that attempt. I'm scared to use an abrasive like barkeepers friend if it's going to scratch up the finish...

You might be able to rub it off with some paper towel and some rubbing alcohol. If not I would see if using it on some wood might wear it off. A little batoning and some feather sticks and shavings might do the trick.

Ouch, that must have hurt a little.

If the scotch bright didn't do it I'd try a very fine steel-wool myself. Not dry though, keep it wet with mineral oil or WD-40. And make sure it's very fine steel-wool.

A dremel and a polish disk with some car polish might do the trick as well, but I know Andy doesn't recommend using powertools on his knives so be very very careful if you're trying this.

Good luck!

Dhunleys suggestion sounds like the most fun ☺ I found an old thread where Andy recommended steel wool and mineral oil so I'm going to try that. I'll let you know how it turns out.

You must dry 01 before letting it sit. WD 40 on 00 brillo pads or scotchbrite pads in the same direction as the original grind will remove the rust. Keep it dry, oil it regularly.

It's a tool. Do what needs to be done and dont worry about "scratching it".
Sooner or later you'll need to thin up the convex grind from sharpening the primar edge. That's going to put a heck of a lot more scratches than some scotchbrite.

Thanks Andy, will do. Too many bad habits from using stainless in the kitchen :)

I wasn't worried about the primary edge. Just trying to keep the original flat grind looking nice-ish.

Really fine sand paper will probably work. Crazy how fast and how much it rusted, my knife sits damp occasionally after I was it and my hands are full, and it has never gotten so bad. Good luck!

I tell you what you do. Just pack that one up and send it to me since it is clearly damaged goods and pick up a brand new one with no rust. I think that is the most practical thing in this case.
