This is an open invite, and is already setup (not merely looking for input).

In the Waterloo Recreation Area, there are rustic bunkhouses available for rent. I have already reserved a cabin for the weekend of Feb. 6/7/8 (Fri/Sat/Sun). So, here is the deal.

Usually about this time of year, I try to break up the winter by getting the kiddies outdoors, and I usually stay in a hotel (not much fun). I think the winter camping would be a bit much for the young one, but don’t want to exclude her either. This year, I decided to rent this rustic cabin.

Currently, the attendees are me, my son Brendan (age 6) and my daughter Madelyn (age 2 ½). The purpose for me is to get to do some outdoor stuff with them, and have a place for them to warm up. Therefore, there is no real set “agenda” for the weekend. I just want to spend some woods time with the kids. However, the bunkhouse will sleep 20, so I wanted to open it up for any and all that are interesting in showing up too.

I have been to this location before, so I know first hand what it is like.

Here are some details about the rustic “bunkhouse.”
- It sleeps 20, mostly bunk style.
- The bunks are single person, and not overly roomy (height-wise. Width room is fine). In the last cabin I was in, there were also 7 beds that were not bunks as well. I am not sure on this specific cabin.
- There is no electricity.
- There is a wood stove for heat, and wood for the stove is provided.
- There is no water. You can bring your own, or there is a hand pump close by. I have found the hand pump water very good, but I am not all that picky either.
- There is no lighting, but the cabin has several places for hanging gas lanterns. I will be bringing two lanterns, but this will be covered more later.
- There is a nicely kept outhouse right out the back door of the cabin, and is specific to the cabin.
- There is a large table and benches in the cabin for doing any type of talking/planning/games, whatever.
- There is a firepit outside the cabin, but the wood provided is supposed to only be for the stove. There are benches and a picnic table already there.
- There are no cooking appliances. More on this later too.
- The floor is wood/plank flooring. Generally shoes or slippers would be required.

Possible activities for the recreation area include:
- Small game hunting. Rabbit and squirrel is still open. I have not hunted the area, so don’t know how good the hunting is. But, it is an option.
- Ice fishing. There are plenty of small lakes in the area.
- Hiking. Nice hiking trails.
- Land Nav. There are lots of good terrain features which makes this an ideal location for practicing feature recognition using topo maps. I can provide USGS topo maps of the area if they are requested.
- Tell stories and make up lies around the campfire!
- Anything else you would normally do in the woods (as long as it does not break any Michigan DNR rules)

Finally, there is a common “yard” area among two cabins. There is a small valley, and if there is snow, I am sure my son will bring his snow board and sleds. I am also looking to see if there is a suitable hill for sledding in the area as well. I am quite sure that there would be no issue with bringing archery equipment and targets too. Although there is plenty of space very close to the cabin (not in the common yard) for that to be done safely too.

Here is how I plan to run the “event.”
- The cabin is already reserved and paid for. It cost me $80 per night, $160 total (Friday night and Saturday night).
- I would simply like to divide the cabin costs among those attending. Very simple.
- Vehicle pass for MI State Park is required for each vehicle and you are on your own with this one. You can do daily permits, or yearly. The cost is $6 for daily, or $24 for an annual permit. Info on this is at the DNR website, and there is a drop box location near the cabin to get your permits (if you do not already have them).
- It is open to everyone. Obviously I am taking my kids, so it is a family friendly event. I make my kids behave as much as possible, but if you just can not stand kids, this may not be the trip for you : )
- It is bunk style sleeping. So, if noises, others snoring, etc bothers you, it might not be the outing for you : )
- In order to make sure everyone has a place to sleep it will be done on a first come, first serve basis. Send me an e-mail at briangandrews at comcast dot net and let me know you will be attending and how many people total.
- No money will be necessary, just bring it to the cabin. I will let you know the final amount a couple days before.
- Since I am being very laid back on the paying/reservations, please show up if you say you are going to. I would hate to have to tell someone they can not come, because the bunkhouse is full and then have people not show up. If you are not sure, you could always check availability right before the event weekend.
- I am already cool with the cost of the cabin, so if nobody shows up, I am fine with having the whole place for me and my kids : )
- Check in time is 3PM on Friday and check out time is 1pm on Sunday. Obviously that is the earliest and latest time and you can show up anywhere in between.

Again, there is no specific “agenda” to do anything. Once we get some attendees, I could see possibly organizing an activity or two. But, I would still like to keep things pretty loose because of having the kids and all. Of course, you are welcome to plan stuff without me as well : ) Basically, I am just offering up a place to stay to do stuff that we all like to do.

Here are equipment recommendations for those attending:
- Stuff to support any activity you plan to do (ice fishing, hunting, etc).
- Sleeping mat. The bunks have mattresses, but they feel like bags filled with sand. I bring my mat to this location.
- Sleeping bags and/or blankets. There is a woodstove, but it is best to plan on it not being a balmy 80 degrees in the cabin.
- Lantern for cabin light. I already plan on bringing 2. You might want your own as well, but keep in mind that if we have 20 lanterns, they obviously all won’t be needed.
- A way to cook. There is obviously a firepit outside as one possibility, but I am bringing one dual burner cook stove. You are welcome to bring your own, but there will not be room for 10 stoves to be spread out. Anyone is welcome to use any of the stuff I bringing along.
- With respect to lanterns and cook stoves, it is my opinion that it is best to bring it and not use it than not have it, and wish you did.
- Food!
- Water is up to you. You can bring it, or get it from the hand pump as necessary.
- Toys! Anything you want to play with or show off.

That is a lot of words, but hopefully it is pretty straightforward!

Please ask any questions you have here, so that everyone else can benefit from the question and answer.

Final Note - If you are in the area, do not want to stay the night I don't see any problem with showing up for the day. You would obviously still need the day or annual park permit and I would appreciate a heads up (in email) just as a warning : )

Here is the description of the cabin from the DNR’s website:

That sounds like a great way to beat mid-winter cabin fever. The Waterloo-Pinckney trail system is the best in the area.

My work schedule is subject to frequent changes (and I don't know when my exams are this semester yet) but schedule permitting I would love to if nothing else stop by for an afternoon. Perhaps once I have a better idea of my schedule I might be able to spend a night or two, but do not hold any room in the cabin for me. If I find out that I can come and there isn't room left its no big problem as I could crash at a friend's place in ann arbor. I'll let you know what the situation is looking like once I know myself.

I would definitely be in for some squirrel or rabbit hunting, I've only got one .22 but have a couple of 12 gauges that I could bring along if anyone needs.

Yet again, once I have a clearer picture of my schedule I can figure out exactly what I'm going to do

Hey cmdionne,

Trying to figure things out last minute is cool. I will keep you posting on how things are going, especially as it gets closer.

Brian - put me in for one bunk. My wife is debating - wants to know if your wife or any other women might show up - she just doesn't want to be the one gal in the place. Tentatively she is in an interested. Actually its the week before I leave for the middle east so it is well timed!

Brian,

Thank you for the offer. I'll be hunting Turkey in that area in the spring and this is as good an excuse to scout the area as any.

I won't be able to stay over night but I can probably swing by for the day on Saturday (weather permitting).

I'll pick up a small game tag and bring the .22 pistol and the 12 gauge. Maybe the .22 rifle if anyone would like to do some plinking.

kgd, a friend of mine has property that borders Waterloo. She lives on 15 acres. If you'd like to do some shooting, I can get in touch with her so you can do some target shooting without having to get a hunting licence. I'll check into the legalities of it before the 7th.

I need to check out the hiking trails before spring too. If I'm going to put together a fish and hike meet and greet this spring, I should at least know where I'm going, right? ;)

I'm pretty certain that you can be afield with a firearm and not need a hunting license as long as there is no attempt to take game. Also target shooting is legal on state land, so I'm pretty sure that one could shoot right there.

If I do end up coming and some target shooting is also on the agenda, I'll bring along some of my collection of milsurps. Should be a good time, but I need to pick up some more ammo.

Really want to go, I'll have to figure something out.
Kinda hard for a 16yo to make it up to things like this.

I have a Italian 12ga over under that I have never taken anything with that I could bring for some hunting, I also could bring the 10/22 and my bow.
I have a msr stove that I can bring up also, have to check how much white gas I have.

I'll check my school and see if I can get a lift.
Thanks alot for setting this up Brian.

Waterloo is highly visited for its excellent hiking trails, and horse riding trails. While it is open to hunting, I would highly recommend NOT using it as a place to just plink away and target shoot all day.

But, like I said before what everyone really does is up to you. I just want it to be safe, and if shooting is on your agenda then I highly advise you to make sure you are obeying all laws. In fact, I would just call the Waterloo HQ and talk to them beforehand. I guarantee there will be officers present in the park.

Private land, or course is a completely different story.

I would for sure like to come out and spend the day on Sat.....I'm about an hour away.
It would be nice to meet ya'llz.
I have a plinker to bring along but I'm not keen on shooting up public land....but I would like to take you up on your friends 15 acres Chris, if you can work that out.
I would look forward to spending some time in the woods.
Thanks for the invite!!

P.S. Maybe finally someone can show me how to start a fire with these spark maker thingys!!!

Understood Brian. If I'm out at Watrloo its for small game hunting and scouting only.

Just so everyone knows, there will be other hunters out in the woods that weekend. They don't mind an occasional shot at a bunny or bushy tail but a bunch of target shooting will make 'em nervous and get the DNR or park rangers called down on ya. In hindsight, that was kinda absent minded of me to throw in the "plinking" thing.

I don't want to sound selfish but I made the offer to kdg because he is from Canada. The rest of us have opportunities to target shoot whenever we want.

If there is interest in getting together for some recoil therapy, I suggest we go to Island Lake Shooting Range one day.

Besides, this started out as Brian and his family getting out in the woods. He was kind enough to invite us so we should impose as little as possible.

I apologize for sending the thread off topic.

Hey guys..... I want people to impose, that is why I opened this up to everyone :D

I just wanted to point out what I did because I have been to this area, and know what it is like. It can be very hard to tell, not knowing the area, coming from far away not knowing what to expect.

I want everyone to do what they want, but also don't want anyone getting in trouble. I think you are very accurate in your assessment that target shooting would likely result in a call and officer visit :D For this particular location anyway.

As indicated to you Brian by PM, my wife and I are booked in. We are pretty flexible on activities that we engage in, but some hiking and fire-making skills and, snow permitting, snow shoeing will be in order. We have four pair of snow shoes - two traditional sets and two modern sets that we can bring if others would like to try them out.

Regarding shooting, that would be fun. Then again, I'm a Canadian, so to us the word gun means a long thing with a stock :D Actually I haven't shot a gun since I was 19 and that is going on 20 years now! Now I would like to see a couple of pieces of cutlery show up from different members!

Any chance that Off-the-map outfitters might bring up a piece of inventory or two?

Understood about the target shooting. We could plan another weekend for it, perhaps later in the spring. Island Lake is a great place, I shot there alot while I was going to school in Ann Arbor. Another place I really like is the Pit in Lapeer. Its a former gravel pit out in the woods, and things there are a little more flexible. I went out with a crew from MGO/Michigan Open Carry right after haloween, and we had a great time blasting away at a vanload of pumpkins. A seperate shooting trip could be alot of fun.

And KGD I might be interested in trying some traditional snowshoes if conditions permit. If there is a good amount of snow I'll likely rent a pair in Ann Arbor at Bivouac on my way over (unless I can find a pair I can afford before then). I've used modern shoes alot but never had the opportunity to try traditional ones.

I could be persuaded to bring a bag full so you can try some different stuff.

Brian, if my plans change and I decide to forgo hunting, would you mind if I brought Daisy out with me? She's my Yellow Lab and is the type that will lick ya to death. She loves meeting new people and doesn't have an aggressive bone in her. Gets along great with other dogs too.

Count on my wife and I spending the day on Saturday. A long hike or ski, depending on conditions, and fireside knife talk sound like a great way to spend the day.

Jeff

I was only planning on bringing stuff with me that I was going to "use." However, if you want to see some knives and such from Breeden and JK, I can probably bring some along.

I have no problems with dogs at all.

If you stay at the cabin, they have a "no pets" policy. Just double checked on that. I think it is because they don't want them in the cabin. If you are just out for the day, it doesn't seem like they could say much about it. Let me know either way. I could always double check on the day only thing just to be sure.

Hey Brian,

Do they supply firewood or should we bring some along?

Jeff

Hey Jeff,

Firewood is supplied for the woodstove inside the cabin. However, it is not supposed to be used for the outside "firepit." I can understand that, because they can only supply so much, and I would hate to run out of heat :D

I am sure there is firewood available locally to buy. In the state parks, dead and down wood can also be used for firewood.

Generally, I just gather my own wood, however the areas around cabins and campsites are generally highly picked over by other campers. So, it may be some work to do so.

You can bring wood too. However, due to the Emerald Ash borer, there are lot of restrictions on moving wood in the area. I can not give answers for everyone (because of different locations) But, I hope anyone planning to bring wood understands all about moving wood in the area. Here is the DNR's Fact Sheet on the Emerald Ash Borer.

I'll bring some along for the outside firepit.
