Rustic Bunkhouse Gathering – Waterloo Recreation Area – SE Michigan

I have no problems with dogs at all.

If you stay at the cabin, they have a "no pets" policy. Just double checked on that. I think it is because they don't want them in the cabin. If you are just out for the day, it doesn't seem like they could say much about it. Let me know either way. I could always double check on the day only thing just to be sure.

It would be just for the day. No need to check. If the park doesn't approve, I can take her to the friends house I mentioned and she can hang out there with her dogs.

One last question, Is the bunkhouse the one off Trist Rd.?

One last question, Is the bunkhouse the one off Trist Rd.?

No, it is off of Loveland Rd. Although, you can not actually get to it from Loveland Rd. That is the closest road, then you will see a sign for the Cabins and the Horse Staging Area. When you turn in there, you will find the parking lots for the cabin.

If you check out this map you will see Loveland road running North and South, and the little cabin symbol indicated the location.

I know it is a big confusing because there are other cabins on site too. If you have any direction questions, please let me know.

Thanks, that where I thought it was. So Brian, whats are tally so far?

This is coming up here real quick, so I just wanted to bump it again.

So far, the cabin has Myself, my kids, a friend I am going to drag along, KGD and wife, and possibly Rayban spending the night. There has been several people claiming to come out for the day on Saturday, but I am not officially "counting" them as in for the cabin.

Still plenty of space, if anyone else can stay at the cabin.

Brian

Come on guys who else is going to shiver with us???

Great chance to whittle a little or perhaps shave a stave!

I'm still in for Saturday. A check of several weather sites show temps above freezing starting Friday. Possibly reaching 40°F over the weekend with a chance of rain/sleet.

K, You might want to take the tunnel so you don't cause any stress damage to the bridge with all that steel? ;):D

I'm still unsure if I can make it or not for the day saturday, spending the night either night is definitely out.

Big thanks to Rayban for pointing me in the direction of this thread!

Looks like I'll be able to come for Saturday afternoon and evening.

To share what information I can.... I've hunted Waterloo a bit, and it's pretty sparse as far as rabbit/squirrel go. In fact, I've never seen a rabbit, and I've only seen about three squirrels. (Got one of them. :D)
But I'll bring a .22 and cross my fingers.
Looking forward to it!
Mike

This is this coming weekend, so I wanted to bump it one last time.

Any last minute people wanting to stay, just let me know! Any last minute people wanting to come for the day, just show up!

Okay - lets talk about gear and reviews! I'll be bringing the little AMK thermolyte 2.0 and heat sheets blanks for people to check out. My new one-of-a-kind breeden knife and 4 pair snow shoes (two traditional, two sets of Tubbs). Will also have the whisperlite stove for cooking. My camera (Nikon D50) and thats about it. Maybe a couple of smaller blades. Also I pilaged a bunch (about 15) little metal cannisters (we have cases of several thousands), great for tinder boxes, to pass around to people who come out.

What will other people be bringing?

Knives, of course. I'll be bringing a few to pass around that some may not have had a chance to handle.
Swamp Rat Howling Rat (gen 2).
My Koster knock off nessmuk cleaver.
Cobbler project knife.
BK7.
Rapid River Timber Cruiser custom hatchet
Mike Wilson damascus custom
Koster K5 necker
and a couple others.

I'll have a couple items to pass out to folks. I have a few canisters/tins as well.

550 Paracord, 30# Poly/nylon rope, and some buckles (courtesy of TF) if anyone would like to make a bracelet or work on knots.

Above all, I'm clearing out some space in my head as I hope to learn a lot from all that attend.

Chris

I've been playing " save the stinkin Mora plastic sheath" lately, and will want to see what ya'll think of em.
Also, I'm bringing along my honker of a fero rod, maybe one of youz can make it work for me.....

I will be bringing my normal woods bumming stuff. Knives, axes....you know.

I was thinking about bringing a couple of Breeden and JK Knives for the fondling :D

Since I will have my kids, I got geocache sites all ready to go. Makes hiking a bit more fun.

Here are some maps I got ready. Go ahead and use them if you want.

Overview - The only one at an odd scale, but it lets you see the general area good.

The rest of these are at the normal scale of a 7.5 minute USGS map.

Waterloo1

Waterloo2 - One of the more useful ones for the area we will be in. If you are good, you will see the cabin on these. If not, I will point them out for you.

Waterloo3

Waterloo4 - Another excellent one for the area we will be in. The main area, just portrait format, instead of landscape.

If you want to know why I set my maps up this way, we can do a mini crash course in land nav. No fancy electronics. Old school map and compass.

I can't wait to meet everyone.

OOH that all sounds lovely! Maybe I'll bring the SOD, if I keep it in the back it will weigh the box of my truck down and give it traction :D

Anybody got a tarp, I will bring a crappy blue one, but I'd love to see some sil-nylon folded up. It would be fun to play with tarp set ups as this is something I keep reading about and haven't been disciplined enough to go about practicing!

I think we have to make one of those swedish torch thingies too, just for the hell of it.
