rusting around an etched mark

I have a customer who bought a knife from me about 6 months ago. Knife was D2. 600 grit hand rubbed finish. I etched my logo with an etch-o-matic. Customer emailed me today to say that the knife has rusted around the etch. Is this something that "usually" happens, something I could have prevented, or the result of putting the knife up wet? Either way, how should I fix it?

My guess is the knife MAY have been put up wet, or wiped down poorly and moisture remained in the etch. However, remember with the etched mark, there is more surface area exposed because of the etch, and that area will be more prone to rust anyway. You can use some renaissance wax in the mark. It dries clear and hard and will protect it pretty well.

Sounds like you didn't neutralize the etchant well enough, Because D2 doesn't rust that easy.
On a side note I usually go over mine with 1500G sand paper after I neutralize it, just to get rid of that little "Halo" that forms sometimes when you etch.
Hope this helps
