rusting problem

Since it's been summer, I've got the grinder and bandsaw on a wh"eeled cart and I take them outside to work with. I grind about 20 feet from the car. Lately, I've noticed really tiny rust spots all over my car. Even on the plastic bumper, meaning it's something on top of the paint. I think it's metallic dust from grinding making it's way on top of the car and rusting.

Anyone else had this happen?

PS: preparing for the oncoming flood. Reservoir downstream from me is 40' about normal, and the reservoir upstream is 50' above normal. Expect to hear about flooding in Iowa starting tomorrow.
 
In damp weather, after grinding in the open smithy, the whole deck is covered with the tiny red spots a day later. Every particle of iron/steel will react with the moisture in the air and become iron oxide.
 
I hope all goes well if the floods come. Used to live in Washington right in a flood plain, river would go from 35 yards wide to a mile or better in the matter of a few hours. Floods suck. Be safe.
 
Do not buff/scrub to remove grinder dust...it will ruin the surface finish on your paint! Yes, I learned the hard way after a body shop left grinder dust on my white truck post accident repairs. They sent me to a detail shop, and they buffed it out. A year later I had to repaint the whole truck.

I hear vinegar works well. We pressure wash industrial equipment with citric acid based cleaners/scale removers to solve this problem, but we are a lot more tolerant of blemishes than most people are with their car. If you have a good wax job, it might come off easily, but it can stain the paint, so I recommend you get it cleaned ASAP.
 
Go to Auto Zone or one of the others and get what is called a "clay bar". A few companys make this. Use the spray, and it will wipe the rust off. I have used these many times detailing cars in the past.

Hello,
I have had that happen also. It will come off with mothers clay bar system. Got mine at advanced auto for about $20. Took about 3hr to do f250 crewcab.
