I went canoeing with a BAD for two days. I went swimming with on that trip too. Left it wet for basically two days. At the end of two days, in the summer heat, wet, with sweat too, I had a little spot of rust on the logo. Then I touched it with my thumb, and it wiped away.

I used to swim with my GW, and SS all the time. No rust.

But I don't live by the ocean.

Does anybody know if this trick would work for rust spots on double cut finishes without messing up the finish?

I've used my busses fishing in salt water many many times opening clams, chunking bunker etc.
Rinse with fresh water within a few hours and nary a speck.
