If you consider that 1/4” W2, 1075, or even 1084 will auto hamon in parks50, without clay, a 1/8 inch blade with 1/16” clay (basically insulation) on each side is plenty. 1084 can through harden in parks 50, but it’s touch and go. Shallow hardening steels don’t need much to force the hamon. Geometry alone will get you most of the way there, like these two:

Top is 1095, bottom is Hitachi white. Both are clayless into DT-48.
The Hitachi white had clay on it, but I chipped it off, and the residue alone was enough to force the hamon. It followed the clay application almost perfectly.
