Rutland cement hamon

If you consider that 1/4” W2, 1075, or even 1084 will auto hamon in parks50, without clay, a 1/8 inch blade with 1/16” clay (basically insulation) on each side is plenty. 1084 can through harden in parks 50, but it’s touch and go. Shallow hardening steels don’t need much to force the hamon. Geometry alone will get you most of the way there, like these two:

Top is 1095, bottom is Hitachi white. Both are clayless into DT-48.

The Hitachi white had clay on it, but I chipped it off, and the residue alone was enough to force the hamon. It followed the clay application almost perfectly.

I annealed the blade and re-coated it and re-HTed it. I did the rutlands much thinner this time around. Its hard to tell from this pic but the clay is very thin, especially nearer the edge.

Did a quick etch and the shape and placement of the hamon looks much better. (Didn't grind through all the decarb, so there are some spots.)

I got about six hours in the forge this afternoon/evening ... working on the Christmas inventory. I took a break and pulled out the tanto for some sanding. I took it to were I will go to stones. I etched it and shot some quick photos. I'll download them in the morning and put them here. I think it will be a pretty good hamon. Blade is forged from low Mn 1075. O-kissaki Shinogi zukuri.

No, just shooting with one hand on the cell phone while trying to tilt the blade to show the hamon. I cropped the shots a bit to get closer detail. It was late afternoon and the sun angle didn't help, either. Whenever I get the togi done this winter, I will shoot some good shots indoors with the light box.

Those are gorgeous! Was that using satanite? Parks quench? Thanks for the inspiration.

I am quenching in canola oil (parks isn't here yet) so that is why I didn't expect much more from the steel.

Thanks. These were 1075, Rutland's furnace cement and parks 50.

I had problems getting the 1075 to harden in canola when I used it last year. I did a salt water quench and got some pretty awsome activity even though I'm pretty sure I did everything wrong.
