...that kept my boat afloat in turbulent waters.

Many of you who know me might understand some of the challenges I've faced over the past year. I don't fly my dirty laundry high, but I'm straight up with where I'm at. And to be honest, this last year has either f'ing sucked for me when it comes to disappointments in people, and very draining in helping others get their head out. The shattering of expectations is lame, but so is having expectations, so there I go. Through it all Ryan counterbalanced it, and the purity of his friendship has thwarted the evil gnome that eggs me on to give it up when times get tough.

Back in March 2011, I started up this little thing. It wasn't a big deal, but it made me feel good, I thought it was a novel concept and I received a cooperative spirit from some really great guys. Ryan Weeks was one of them.

Ryan and I have an affinity. That's a beautiful thing, and something that I feel is special about the handmade knife community, (HKC for short). It is still such a niche, that closeness among the like minds which constitute it comes pretty easy, despite differences which may be present outside the interest. Even through the internet, and without the benefit of a face to face meeting, it's amazing really the friendship that I've received and that spontaneously occurs all the time.

Well, blah freaking blah...the point of this thread is to tell you all how stoked I was to come home after a tough day at work to the newest print of Blade magazine, (the only magazine I subscribe to) sitting on the counter;

No custom knife could make me as happy as seeing this. Ryan, thanks my friend. You've got a lot of class, and you'll always be the Best New Maker in my book!

Ryan is a great guy and friend, and I'm glad to hear he's helped to pick you up when you were down, Lorien:thumbup:

Can't wait to get a copy with my buddy in it! Congrats, Ryan!

Cool thread and cool write up. Thanks for posting.

Good for you Ryan. You're on your way buddy.

Lorien, that design was my favorite of the ones you posted. Your PIF thread had some lumps in the early stages of planning, but once everyone understood where you were coming from they all began to see the good in what you were trying to do. I often contemplated a variation of your PIF theme, but won't get into that now. Congrats to Ryan for the exposure, congrats to you, Lorien, for the lasting impression your design has made, and I must say that I own a very special knife that you, Ryan, and I are all a part of. That same design of yours, made by Ryan in miniature for the first annual mini KITH that I hosted last year! I hope someday to own a full size version to compliment my mini.

Congratulations Ryan, you deserve it:D Lorien, I feel the same way about the man. Great attitude and really pushing himself in knife designs and production.

Wow. I haven't gotten my copy yet, s2f dropped me a PM with congratulations on the blurp in Blade. I am honestly a little upset a Canadian got a copy before me  takes a little of the bite off that it was Lorien! What a great guy and I am humbled by his comments in this thread and whispers that get back to me second hand. His PIF thread moved me from a stagnant pond many new makers find them selfs in, caused by finding comfort in the easy designs. Thank you for posting this up Lorien. I will try not to gush too much because we know that most of the people that have posted in this thread have heads that are used to swelling on a regular basis ;).

I will not mention every name that has influenced me during my minuscule journey (Way to many and will leave someone out). To those that have posted or been mentioned here in this thread...

Jonny Mac and I are in the same Bladeforum Graduating class, we spent a bunch of time (Too much) at the 2012 OKCA show. I consider Jon a close friend and a great knife maker.

I met John Doyle and Mike Quesenberry at the 2011 Boise, ID. Knife show. I was completely discouraged and beat down by both of them, a page was turned that weekend and I decided to move in a different direction. I will never be a full time maker pumping out blade after blade, I always needed to slow down an focus on my Fit, Finish and Design. I still find myself flip flopping between the two (What do I call it?) styles or train of thought as a maker. But know that I can make a phone call to one or both of these amazing makers for guidance.

Steve, Bigfattyt, and Xander thanks for your comments. I really appreciate this place!

It's wonderful to see these kudos and comments directed towards you Ryan.
Congratulations Ryan!!

Man! You just had to go and get all mushy on me:p There are times when I regret not getting into this craft sooner in my life, but when I look at the guys with whom I've learned this trade alongside, I couldn't be happier about where I'm at.

Ryan Weeks, Mike Davis, Erik Albertson, Daniel Fairly, Ben Tendick, and others.......some great guys, great makers, and I'm proud to have learned knife making alongside them:thumbup: Love seeing any of my buddies get some recognition.

Congratulations again! Your knives are definitely on the same level as any of the others in Blade. Very strong showing you have in the issue as well, great picture/great knife.

I used to open packages that UPS brought with a screwdriver or whatever other pointy object that was at hand.
But after a package from Ryan arrived I get to use this beauty.

Congrats Ryan!
I don't know how you will keep up with all of the orders, first Tactical knives and now Blade. ;)
Keep up the fine work!

Thanks a lot guys, really means a lot coming from people that I respect and admire.

friendship keeps us all intact and moving forward, and I'd be remiss to not mention that for every challenging person I've had to deal with, there are MANY others whose friendship I have great appreciation for. It's just that this time, Ryan got published, and gave credit, which he also did in the Tactical Knives article. He didn't have to, and it's that recognition that is so appreciated.
:)

Haven't been around the forum much recently, but I'm glad I decided to pop my head in tonight and was able see this. Congrats on the write-up Ryan!!!
