Ryu swayback jack

That's my favorite pattern and he's done a killer job on that one. The stag is incredible. Congratulations!

It certainly is a beauty! It appears his attention to detail is fantastic! Congratulations!!

This swayback jack from Ryuichi Kawamura arrived yesterday. I asked Tony Bose for his 3 5/8s swayback pattern (thanks again) and then sent it on to Ryu for his first swayback knife.

Blades are ATS-34. I’m really glad I went with the stag scales. I asked him to do some threaded bolsters like on some of my older Henckels knives instead of his usual fluted bolster. The bolsters also are slightly pinched.

The blades are 4-5 on the tension scale, perfect in every position. It has the extended spring on the pen blade.

A bigger swedge on the main blade and on the pen blade would have been nice, but that’s my only quibble other than a lighter wallet for Blade.

Just gotta love that stag!!
Great score.

Whoa dude! That's a dandy

so...does this mean you're not going to buy as many rounds as you did last year? We have to talk:rolleyes:

Kerry,

I will be able to buy one or two rounds at Blade, in between “exotic” dances in the pit to raise extra funds. I’m getting a lot of requests for the “Shy Tuna” dance from attendees at last year’s Blade show.

I noticed last night that Ryu put some raised bumps in the liners where the kicks fold into the knife. Are these called catch bits?

Bill, I’d love to see your Ryu knives.

Nobody has sent me Pay Pal yet so I’m just going to keep this one for now.

Ah, looking at your pictures again, I see that the blades have almost no kicks on their tangs -- seems Ryu prefers to do things a little bit differently and put the "kicks" on the springs. Not sure what they would officially be called though. He could see this as generating less impact shock to the spring and less chance of blade overtravel from the snap closed (he would probably be right too).

Catch bits are typically the little extra bits of liners that offset a smaller, thinner blade to give room for the point of a longer thicker blade when they're both operating on opposite ends of the same spring (the catch bit essentially "catches" the point of the longer blade by creating an open space for it to fall).

.....

The shorter the distance between the back square and the kick, the easier that blade will overtravel, especially on long blades. A traditional kick extends that distance and reduces overtravel. Spring tension, blade length, kick position...all play a part in overtravel or lack thereof.

I really like the look he achieved by doing it that way. Please bring it with you to the show so I can play with it :D

Thanks Kerry and Zerogee. I was grateful for the bump on the main blade spring when I was watching my wife snap the blade shut.

There is a more pronounced "kick" on the blades inside of the bolsters that line up with the bumps.
