I have a project brewing where I need some shock resiliency in damascus. Thought about using S-7 in the mix and was wondering if it etches dark.

Thanks for any info on this, or suggestions for another steel that is suited for shock and etches nice and dark in damascus mix.

All the best!!

Dont they use S7 for jack hammer bits?
I have seen it used on damascus before and there was good contrast but I dont know how dark it gets.
Do I see a gun part in the works?

I was curious myself so I etched one of my lathe chisels I made out of S7 and it does get dark in a 50/50 mix of FC and distilled water.

BTW, There is a discussion over on another forum and it appears they make jackhammer chisels out several tool steels. I have some that are air hardening. I just tested six of them today since I was curious.

Made my last set of knives out of it and soaked it in vinager over night wraped in a old shirt. etches nice and dark:)
