I found a nice size peice of S-7 at work. It has already been ground to 3/16 on the blanchard. anybody know of any reason not to use it to make a knife blade? or would it make a decent blade?

Thanks, Chris

Chris from what I've read on S7 (and only read, not firsthand experience) it has amazing impact resistance but subpar edge holding and wear resistance. I am contemplting trying some in a sword, so if you do something with it I'd be very interested in your experiences.

Go to the Crucible Particle Metallurgy website, http://www.crucibleservice.com/

and read the following:
http://www.crucibleservice.com/cruts.htm which is 'Selecting High Performance Tool Steel.'

Read also this: http://www.crucibleservice.com/cruheat.htm

Which is 'Heat Treatment and Fabrication of tool steels.'

Between these two topics you will find a wealth of information on tool steels, including S7, which is rated with a number of other tool steels, and comes in tops in toughness, but lowest in wear resistance.

Hope this helps, Walt

S-7 steel is what is used to make jackhammer bits.

I have seen some of Edmund Davidson's integral knives that were made of S-7. The steel ain't much for edge holding or corrosion resistance but you sure can beat the "you know what" out of it.

Do you hear that?
That is the sound of inevitability.

Barry, that is exactly why it interests me for swords. Edge holding doesn't mean much if you're holding a sharp stump in your hand.
