hi guys,

this question has to have been asked here a million times.

i tried to do a search here but the dang search engine just won't search for me. i enter "buck conversion" and the screen changes to a fresh page and all it says is "done" at the bottom.

can someone educate me, please, on the ins and outs of the buck converisons? (and this damn search engine if there's a trick to it).

who makes the best conversions, who sells the best conversions at a good price and what is better, leaf or coil spring and so on.

oh yeah, how do you spot the phonies? i've been looking at the conversions and some of them just don't look right.

i just need a basic education on them. the search engine here has been frustrating me since 2001. sometimes it works, other times, nada!

maybe someone else can get the search engine running and just copy links to the threads that answer these questions.

thanks,

mike

1st off- buck dont recognize conversions at all and will not honor warranty on any of them.
now that said there are many out there and some are cheep imitations of a buck with buck etched onto the blade...if it is cheep soed it pass the smell test...if it is too good to be true it is ..
Cumberland Mountain does some good work there is another out there that i hear good things on also i just dont remember the name
either spring or leaf has it advantages or disadvantages... and i dont know either
most run to 150 done right some times resales at 120 or so once in awhile one under 100 but rare on the big E
usley bid to 90 +ship
maby one of the guys that have one will speak up ea Cxxxxz?
any way be careful
jest type in switch blade or automatic knife sale directly that will bring you to some sites that specialize in them...
legal in many states like fla with permit... luck!

There are some nice 110 conversions out there.

I have no idea who did these. I consider them curios and not users. Round button is full auto.
Oval is auto/manual

Actully, autos don't get a lot of conversation here.

334dave has stated some good info. I have a Buck 500 auto conversion, a few Buck 112 auto conversions, a few Buck 110 auto conversions and a Buck 560 auto conversion. These include coil spring & leaf spring. Prices ranged from $125 for a 'plain' 110 on up to $450 Ghostown. They are not users but lead a very pampered life locked in a drawer. Only one I had a problem with was a coil spring which wouldn't 'lock' closed. A shot of WD-40 cured the problem. It's hard to find out who made the conversion... no one wants to 'give up' their source. Out of 11 conversions, I only know who did the actual conversion on one of them. I like the looks of the 'button' over the 'oval' but both seem to do a great job. Most were bought over the 'net but I would suggest visiting a knife show in a 'auto' legal state and sampling several Buck conversions for performance. It won't be the cheapest buy but you'll have a pretty good idea of what you're buying.

Clydets's price estimate might be slightly low, however the ones in my pic above are either finger grip or green, and I believe I have a red, and are nickle silver bolsters. So not totally plain.. But were higher than the $125. But as anything, prices go up and down.

If legal to carry, I wouldn't be afraid to carry either one. When these two lock up they are as tight as any 110.

As far as buying them on ebay, well ebay seems to have some filters for words like Auto and Conversion in knife auctions and have been pulling those auctions immediately.

Humm...... I can feel the prices rising as we speak... they are becoming rare..: :D

I believe in a lot of states they are legal to own as curios, Just dont carry them. Check your local laws...duh...

The prices I listed weren't estimates... that's what I paid. :) The last conversion I bid on was a 112/110 dual bladed auto but it was 'yanked' from the bay. I believe my bid was around 550 but from what I gathered, the seller wouldn't have taken less than 635. Now that would have been a 'unique' conversion! ;)

Sorry,, I should have clarified low end.... I was around $135 for the two in the pic. ea...

Was that one of the Transistion 110/112 knives ? Now that would definitely be an interesting conversion. would love to play with one of those.

Yep... one of the Transition 110/112's. I think he was going to sell it on BA but of course that never materialized!

I would be very interested in finding someone to do the round button convrsion on one of mine...

hey,

i found a used one. nice price too. but i'm always a little leery of buying used.

anyway, here's a couple of pics of the used one. do all the conversions have the semi-circular indentation at the bottom of the rocker like this one does?

how does it look to you guys otherwise?

Mike,
Kind of looks like someone started out with a round button and then decided to to to the long oval. Neither of my two with the oval have that cutout...
The green one in the pic above...Other one is same but in red.

No. In fact, that is the first with that bevel that I've seen. Most that I've...seen...have a polished rocker button with slightly rounded edges...that one seems to have a brushed finish...

There are different buttons, too. Some are round; some are long ovals, like that one. If the button catch on the blade is a hole, it is single action (springs open only). If it is a cutout notch, it is double action (can also be pulled out manually).

The single action autos go for about $95 new...the double actions are about $135 new...That's for Nickel Silver bolsters, brass ones are ~$10-$15 cheaper...the wood color can be almost anything...I've seen green, red, charcoal...probably a few others...

Several companies/distributors have made them...Cumberland, Paragon...

That brass 110 that Stu shows on his site (with the button artfully covered) has a hole in the blade for the button catch; so is a single action. As is the custom right above it.

Check TKA or BladeBid, they always pop up.

(Of course, this is all second-hand talk that I've heard in biker bars...no real knowledge of these matters myself)

come on Trax... put up a pic of all of yours.

Trax.....have you seen the brass ones going for $80 ?? I have never seen them cheaper than Stu....he has the best prices on anything that goes click at the press of a button.....

It's a single action, used, blade looks nice, sheath looks OK...I'd guess about $50-65 would be fair...but I would get a DA rather than this SA...

On the other hand, that round button that Pack Rat posted is pretty much a collectors item now...I'm pretty sure that company went out of business...the green oval button DA below it is the state-of-the-art in Buck DA autos today...wire-EDM cuts; specially modified backspring; specially made wire blade spring; CNC machined button...before eBay banned them, I've seen them go for $110 new...

thanks guys,

the one in the pic appears have nickel silver bolsters. hard to tell anything about it, really. light does funny things to pics.

if you had to make a judgement on its quality, what would you say? best guess type of thing.

thanks,

mike

Looks really good to me, Modified Buck 110. It opens when you press the button right? :D

They've been around for a couple years; sellers come & go...Prices fluctuate...Stu is about average as far as prices...the various knife auctions have a wider variety...

Edit: I just checked BladeBid - they have several 110 DA's for $120 [opening bid; "Buy It Now" = $121] and a 110 "clone" DA for $35... :D
