S.O.B with a Serious Mirror Polished Edge

Our of curiosity Rob, when you say that there is a 5 micron apex, how do you know this? How do you measure it? Do you use a toolscope? That's about the only way that I would know how to measure .00019".

That's looking mighty sweet BTW. Good work.

Fair question ---- the answer is actually quite easy. The final grit you sharpen the edge with (assuming you've done a proper job) is the apex thickness. Since I've worked my way from low grits and have progressively/effectively moved up the grit chart with many stages in between, I'm confident that the .5 micron balsa wood strops that I finish with --- end up leaving an apex that's properly .5 microns thick. Hope that helps ;)

Indeed! I learned new things today! Thanks for clearing that up.

I'd have guessed that you used a tool scope or other shop measuring equipment. My bosses would flip if I busted out an sob to measure the apex thickness at work.

I don't think that is correct. Grit does not equal thickness. Micrometer calipers should iron this out.
