S-s-stutterin!

tough to photograph

Nick who?🤣
Definitely going to watch Nick's videos again.
Has anyone encountered what I described?
I cleaned the shop up today, that will help with the frustration level at least
I'm not sure I fully understand what problem you have without photo .I rarely finish a knife with a hand sanding in higher grit , but I never liked finish with new/fresh piece of sandpaper . I am talking on 1000-1200 grit .Whenever I’ve done that , there is always something I don’t like on that blade .Then I used worn/used sand paper for finish . And I start to like that finish on blade .No weird lines or anything else , nice even finish every time .
One more thing , try hard rubber under sand paper ..............

Lubrication with soapy water also helps. Some folks like WD-40 but I hate the smell. I use water, a teaspoon of dish soap, and a tablespoon of baking soda for hand sanding lube. Dip every few passes. I have considered putting a mister on the sanding arm with a foot pedal, but probably never will.

went back at er with the knife mounted up rock solid and not chance for flex or wiggling- I'm pure sure that's why I was getting the stutters. Used the lil micarta stick no backing and 1000 grit with diagonal passes and scratched away at it like a pimp with crabs. So far it looks like the stutters are gone but I'll confirm with some daylight tomorrow

this rough finish shows the kind of stuttering I was talking about, and after hours and hours of trying to figure out how to improve my technique, I realized that it's probably the backing on my sanding tools causing the problem. I cut a hockey puck into thin slabs and am going to stick that on my stick and see how that works out. Some of the testing I did with it last night seemed to solve my problem. Up til now I have a stiff piece of leather glued on and I think that it has too much give and is causing the chatter.

I do appreciate all your suggestions and advice, btw

made this tonight, used it a little bit and it seems to be solving the problem. Need the cold light of day to know for sure

The surface of the blade appears to be very slightly uneven, maybe try wider sanding sticks.
