So, bored today and though I might as well go window shopping on some website. Knifecenter looks good I think to my self, lets go through some pages. So while going though the site I happen upon a Smith and Wesson folder and it happens to say 440c under the blade steel. Pass it up, go to another page, "huh wait, really?" I go back and it is indeed 440c thats listed, got me curious.

So, anyone have any experience with S&W knives? Are their knives (listed at about 20$) really 440c and is it heat-treated anywhere as good as Boker's? Are their builds stout and of quality?

The ones that I got that said they were 440c were actually 4034 steel, which is as soft as butter, but really shines up nice.

Fit and finish is low
Steel is crap
Price is high

You could find other cheaper knives from other more reputable companies that would be much better.

P.S.

Jump over to this thread http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=766477 "EDC for under 20"

And pick any of the ones mentioned and they would be 10x better than any S&W knife.

Avoid them like the plague.

440C huh? I bought my second "tactical folder" back in 2000, which was their SWAT model. Never held an edge beyond the third cut and the liner lock failed nicking my pinky finger.

Go for Boker Plus or Spyderco's Byrd line for low-priced quality knives.

Make sure the blade is extra dull, so open it up and cut a piece of paper with it, that'll dull it up enough so it won't cut you when the liner fails.

The liner will fail, just like my swmp1 swmp2 swmp3 swmp4L.

I am going to test it with an open mind like the rest of them, same as the Buck Ghost Rider I also have coming.

They will do how they do.

They suck , to be blunt.

I bought a co-worker a $20 flipper with rubber type handles so he wouldnt borrow my knives anymore, the damn thing just cant take an edge.

Kershaw , Cold Steel , Spyderco and others all offer far better knives for the same price range.

i had a s&w model CK8H. i never really used it, but it seemed nive enough. g10 handle, locked up tight, no noticeable blade play, i cant comment on the steel as i gave it to a buddy because i never really used it. he doesnt know much about different steels so he wouldnt really be able to give any input on it either, but he beats the hell out of it landscaping and said he loves it so much.

in short. if youre used to kershaw, spyderco, benchmade or higher, youll probably think theyre crap. but if youre used to crap chinese crap knives, youll think its pretty decent.

i have found them inconsistent from knife to knife, even though they are the same model.

mediocre materials, but average fit/finish.

I used to have a Boker Exskelibur for a while (that a certain person took and gave me back my ole Case Trapperlock that she'd been holding on to!) and was VERY pleased with it. I'm always interested in trying different knives and companies I've never used before. That said I don't like wasting what little change I can scrounge up either, and I'd like to keep my fingers :). So I'll hold off on that S&W purchase unless I hear good word of it.

BTW thank you ankerson for your efforts!

s&w really has no excuse to be putting out such crap knives, especially with ones the same price and cheaper! being offered by spyderco, kershaw, and others.

with the attitude towards overseas knives changing, not like the attitude ever got to their sales, s&w could easily be reborn as a real knife offering, and not just, oh it was my first knife before i knew better.

s&w sold the rights to use their name on knives and other products like flashlights and generally crappy police type gear.

I wouldn't waste my money. They are junk.

You want a cheap knife? Buy a Byrd or a SAK.
