S&W Knives

The second knife I began to EDC, and the first one I bought (the Buck Vantage select that previously resided in my pocket was a gift), was a S&W Homeland Security from Big Lots. Cost me $7. The knife was a great user while I carried it, and is still a fine knife to this day. It's been retired, because I have so many other, and in many cases better options to choose from in my collection now, but at the time, it fit the need very well. For the price I paid...I would certainly recommend it.

Had a folder for a little while this past summer, picked it up at autozone or napa. Broke it in two weeks of occasional work use. Granted it would probably be fine for opening mail, or cutting up boxes, but so would a sharp key...

well to roll in another knife company that has fallen quite a bit from the ranks IMO, gerber actually came out with a quiet sprint run of the E-Z out in CPM s30v i just got two from SMKW cant wait to test these babies out

as to S&W, they may have some good desigsn but i still trust theyre guns more then their knives

I bought a HRT Darrel Ralph designed folder. loved it and then gave it to my friend. Bought an Extreme Ops folder the same day i bought the HRT, i've beat the hell out of this knife, it holds a great edge and does what i would expect of a $12 knife.

I don't want to come across as an avid S&W fan, because I'm not. I just think some of their knives (read "some") are very much underrated. There are some that are just junk. Others are fairly decent, but unappealing (like their Power Glide). Still others are decent, cheap and make good gifts. They may get people interested in getting, better quality knives. Like I said, their Magnesium and Hawkbill knives are very good for everyday carry and as gifts.

S&W Power Glide. Strong knife, but totally unappealing. Good for Boy
Scouts and campers who might be tempted to buy and use slip joints.

Smokey Mountain Knife Works used to have a good collection at good prices, but they've sold out of many of them and I wonder if some of them might be going to Japan, as I've never seen SMKW so out of stock. Or it might be increasing steel prices. Who knows?

So far I haven't ever come across a truly hideous S&W knife, but I know they're out there. I have found that many of the budget knives of otherwise reputable prices are horrible...I think I mentioned Boker's Magnum line. Yeesh!
