"S" Warranty Question

I just bought a new "S" in black. Now, say three or four years down the road, I've sharpened it enough that the edge is gone. Will Spyderco perform work on it?

This is definitely one of those "Depends" questions. The short answer is yes. They will be able to put a new edge on it. Spyderco will always treat you right. The questions are will you treat your knife right and then send it in to Spyderco to treat them right (fairly)? If you haven't used the blade as a prybar, chisel, or ninja throwing star, then you shouldn't have any trouble at all with Spyderco treating you right.

We've had people come through here in the past who literally abused the hell out of a knife and basically expected Spyderco to give them a new knife. To quote Spyderco:

Spyderco knives are designed and built for use as cutting tools. Use of our knives for any purpose other than cutting is considered abuse. As with any usable tool, Spyderco knives can wear out. They may also fail to perform if not used or cared for properly. If your knife has been put to hard use for a long period of time, it is possible that Spyderco will be unable to improve the condition of your knife.

If unable to improve the condition of the knife, we will return it to you with the recommendation it be retired from use.

What I mean is, what if I've sharpened it so much that the edge is gone. Not there any more. The "S" has a spiderweb cut-out on the blade, and the edge is only about 1/8" deep before it disappears into the cut-out. Here's a link to Spyderco's photo to show what I mean...

Also, I can't seem to find much information about the "S" on here; just release dates and a pass-around. Does nobody own / like this knife except me?

What do you mean by "perform work on it"? It's definitely not covered by their warranty if that's what your asking. Normal wear is not covered. They might be able to replace the blade but I'm not 100% sure if they readily provide that service.

Obviously the blade of the S would be completely useless if its initial edge is worn away. If it ever gets to that point then I'd say that you've definitely got your money's worth out of it!

I have some knives that have been used and sharpened extensively for years and I have yet to remove ~1/8" from their edge.

I found the S to be a nicely made knife which fit my hand very well. Assuming you like compression locks and don't plan to use it for food prep, it's a good value for the money.

Can't recall ever seeing a photo of a Q or and R with enough wear on them to take them out of service, but if you're looking for a knife to use heavily day in and day out, the S is probably not the best choice.
