S1 custom retention strap

I purchased an S1 and it came with a standard leather sheath. It works fine for around the cabin or fishing, but i am concerned that since there is barely any retention, I may lose the knife while backpacking.

Anyone do any custom retention straps for their rigs? I was thinking of just gluing a piece of leather and snaps to hold the knife secure, but am not sure if this will suffice. Just looking for options if anyone has done this.

Thanks.

Get a kydex and never look back. This one is from Survival sheath systems.

The new zytel sheath works well too. The bigger the knife the better it works.

Thanks guys.. figured that would be the way I have to go... Anything i can do till then? I am going backcountry for 5 days next week and want to make sure i have a fix by then.

Psy-Ops - is that an F-1? How strong is the retention - are you getting bad wear marks on the handle?

Retention is EXCELLENT! Slight wear marks.

The teklok allows multi positions (360 degrees) within 2-4 minutes.

thanks - I checked out the site and unfortunately it does not look like they may a sheath for the S1...

Here's a shot of almost all of my spec-ops sheaths with the knives I keep in em.All of them are molded to fit the respective knives.

I also have an A1 in a spec-ops survival sheath but it fits so well that I didn't need to alter it at all.

Nice sheaths... looks like one of those is in my future. For the quick fix looks like i'm just going to glue on some snaps and a piece of leather... unless anyone has a better idea....

mete.. have some 550 cord through the lanyard hole already. There was a thread on here about how to rig a lanyard so that it didn't snag, and then you pulled the chord to make a loop to slide your hand in for better leverage.. I have it rigged that way and like it. It prevents snagging on limbs while traveling. At present when hiking I attach my sheath to the pack, and I pull the chord on the handle of the knife and make a loop. I then attach it with a carabiner to the pack.. just as a back up. Trying to get around doing this - makes getting to the knife slow.

I like using a elastic bunge 5mm cord. I would pass it through the landard hole and make the lengh so I would be able to pull it down over the sheath. The natural strech of the cord would make it easy to get at the knife. Another option would be to tie it around the handle through the belt loop, then strech over the handle to deploy the knife. A quickie fix till you decide what sheath carry you want.

I did the same to my last water bottle to keep from losing the bottle from the backpack pouch. Couldn't afford to lose that last water bottle.

thanks wjzgma,

I think your first option confused me as much as my prior post confused everybody... but I understand the basics.... an elastic material. That is a good idea - I may give that a go. Are you passing a bite (as in a loop) through the lanyard hole of the knife and down around the tip of the sheath... that seems like it may work. Since i'm already using the lanyard hole - maybe i'll figure out something along those lines...

Spec-ops has a blank sheath that has the attachment points for many different pouches. It looks like the ones pictured above but with straps instead of the pouch. You can fit any size pouch you like.

ok - thanks to some of the thoughts from others - made a custom retention strap in about a minute and a half. Took a one inch piece of elastic webbing and slid it through the gap in the sheath where the belt loop attaches to the sheath. Made an overhand knot and tightened it so the webbing would not pull back through. The webbing stretches over the butt of the knife and down to the tip of the sheath. I cut a slit in the webbing so the point of the sheath could be slid in and hold the webbing in place. Glued around the slit so it would not further rip. All I do is stretch the webbing over the knife and put the point of the sheath into the slit... solid and came out great.

You could also use those velcro bands that lock in itself (hooks on one side and loops on the other). Then just wrap it through the beltloop and around the handle. Done. When you use the knife, just keep the band in your pocket :)
