S1 vs LMF II

One more vote for S1 if you are concerned about the handle get A1 the handle is signifficantly wider and longer.

The Gerber is a nice hefty piece of metal and the handle is quite big and solid feeling, with a usable, (unlike the tang protuberance on the Fallkniven) hammer for the pommel. The sheath system is quite excellent and makes a good handle for the hammer/handle, dig?
Complete package, ready to rock from the box. No f-ing around making handles or somesuch. Cheap. Just do it already! And report back with in-the-field pictures;)

The S1 is a nice little knife, but a very different animal than the LMF. Of course I'd encourage owning both. The more the merrier.

As I was ready to order I chose an entrek elk instead of either. Cant wait till it comes.

I own both. Th Fallkniven S1 wins hands down. If you think the handle is too small wrap it with paracord or the tape they put around tennis racket handles. Can't comment on the zytel sheath as I have the older kydex sheath. Very nice all-round knife. Not too big, not too small.

The Gerber is more of a "gadget" than a knife. I don't like the serrations and the big "butt". The knife is also very hard to get in and out of the sheath. There is some kind of sharpening device in the sheath, which is kind of a good idea in theory, but how are you going to use that if it's attached to your gear?

My advice: get yourself a Fallkniven S1 and a Fallkniven DC3 or DC4 sharpener.

I have both the the F1, which I carry in a modified leather sheath as a neck knife, and the S1 which I carry in the zytel sheath with a D3T sharpener glued on to it. A really great solution.
I dont carry them as EDC since they would be overkill at work but otherwise they go with me everywhere.

I guess a mall ninja likes the LMF II with all the gadgets on it but a real survival guy would choose the F1 or S1 because of its strength. They also look less "combat" if you encounter other people, even with the zytel sheath.

Isn't the LMF II made of 12c27 steel? Isn't that a Scandinavian steel? Odd, if so... the USA knife made of Swedish steel - the Swedish knife made of a Japaneese laminate!

BTW, I saw a LEO supply place that had the LMF for less than a sale-priced F1 blade-only. I also read a few complaints about the softer grip cover deteriorating rapidly. I had resisted buying one due to it's design features aimed more at exiting a downed plane, not a likely problem at my age. As to the Falkniven style of 'survivor' knife, I'll take some good old US Upper Peninsula made Bark River knives, like my Fox River, LE North Star, and Gameskeeper. On my short list is their 'Bravo-1', a designed-for-the-military knife - with either a Kydex or leather sheath. Those knives are true hand made knives at low production prices - give them a look.

Stainz

PS I have never touched either the LMF II or any Falkniven. I would be more likely to buy the former.

I received the LMF for Christmas (it was on my list:)). If I was still in the Corps, in a 'Red Dawn,' or any urban survival situation, this is the knife I want by my side. That is why I asked for it; to be prepared for an urban situation. It is my number 1 pick for those scenarios.

That said, it is not the best choice for 'bushcraft' knife or just to take along for a walk in the woods. I have yet to find a Fallkniven to handle in person, so I can not pass judgement - yet.

Entrek eh? Good call man. Those are some pretty nice looking knives too.

I just ordered a s1 for no apparent reason I have an f1 and love it, but I like the look of the s1 I figure the added length can get me through some thicker batonning

Someone (Fielder) went and dug up a 2 year old thread and threw it back into circulation.
I guess this means I don't get to recommend a Fallkniven since this is all ancient history.:)

S1 for sure! Does it all very very well. I actually like the zytel sheath, go figure! The "S1" is in my name for a reason!!

I don't like my LMF II ASEK. I find it impractical for anything useful on a daily basis. Blade is very thick, doesn't hold an edge for very long, heavy to carry, with a bulky sheath. It's stays in my truck in case of emergency and I look at it maybe once a year. At least it didn't cost the farm, so it's not a total loss.
