I was looking thru the 2011 catalog and I happened to glance at the steel chart page. I noticed the presence of S110V and I started wondering...was/is there any plan for a Spydie with this steel?

People, including me, go totally nuts for S90V and I can only imagine what frenzy a Spydie in S110V would create...

That would be awesome if they did bring an S110V knife to market. :D

As far as I know there is only one production knife to ever use S110V, which is truly a shame.
According to Phil Wilson it's a good compromise between wear resistance and grindability when compared to S125V. Grindability is the reason virtually no-one is willing to work with S125V, even Phil said he won't bother with it anymore, given that S110V is very similar in the end result, but easier to work with.

S90V is still very good, yes, but it hasn't been the best option available for a few years now.
With all this mule team stuff and new steel types coming out the wazoo, it is extremely strange that we haven't seen some S110V yet. I have to wonder if there are still complications to acquiring the stuff.

The problem is finding makers that are willing to work with S110V, it's not exactly easy to work with, neither is S90V and both are expensive steels.

S110V is also pretty limited and not easy to get.

Should give around 20% better edge retention than S90V and can be taken to a higher RC hardness than S90V.

Both are excellent steels and one wouldn't be disappointed with either.

Could swear that a year or two back, Sal hinted that an S110V Sprint of the new version of the Native might happen. Of course supply may be a problem now, first question would be whether or not Crucible is still making it.

Crucible is still making S110V, but on a special request basis.

Military is the perfect platform for this steel. The only knife I have in S110V is the Shallot. I love that knife, it still has the factory edge and it has eaten all kinds of cardboard.

Re bolded part...Ultra drool...

I missed out on the Shallot...there was one on sale recently on the trade section and I just had spent too much money on tons of knives and passed on it. I now regret it.

The Military just seems to be the best all around tool for new steels. We cannot exclude the Manix2 of course, but it's not as classic as the Military yet. I'm still hoping Sal finds a way to give us at least a sprint of M390 w/ blue G10. I really would not mind a Para2 in that combination either.

I remember seeing a PE Shallot a member here had for sale. I have the CE version, it was a gift from a fellow knifeaholic. I kick myself for not finding the PE version.

Yeah a Military or Para 2 in S110V would be a drool over knife for sure and if the hardness was around 61 or 62 RC.

Thinking of a Para 2, Manix 2 or Superleaf in S110V gets my heart pumping. I would not complain about M390 either. Mike

Crucible only made one heat with CPM S110V and it is pretty much all gone at this point. I was able to get some early on and have enough to last for a while. I conserve it by making partial tang fixed blades with it. It was very expensive since it had to be surface ground due to the final hot roll texture. This stuff is full of carbide as already noted and is a category 1 steel ( on the Ankerson ranking scale) , my opinion based on testing and field use. Maybe we can convince some of the companies out there like Carpenter and Bohler to make us some or at least something like it. Phil

I think Thom Brogan posted a thread in which he "tested" a Kershaw with a 110v blade by digging in the garden. It didn't affect the edge... ;)

We've got some S110V coming in. Don't know what we'll make out of it yet. We thought we would try some new grinding methods.

Hi Phil,

As I understand, Crucible is still making S110V. We'll see how much comes in?

I think Carpenter could be convinced to make some S110V variant. They made BD-1 (Gingmi I), We have a Carpentetr S90V variant in-the-works, They made some powdered BG-42 for us that we'll put into something.

If that is the optimal RC to balance edge retention and toughness I'm willing to offer up my pocket and test the steel out for any length of time and submit reports if needed for verification purposes.

Uh oh! Phil Wilson is using the Ankerson Ranking Scale for benchmarking steel.

Next thing you know we'll have a 10 page thread arguing the validity of ARS results vs. CARTA testing.

I vote Para 2, Military, Manix 2, or all of the above :D
Maybe some Toxic Green G10 for those three S110V sprints ;)

^^ Toxic Green anything is pure awesomeness, I would love to see something like the Paramilitary 2 in toxic green g10, black blade in regular production of course :D... As for the folder with the S110V... I vote for something new along the lines, style and size of a Gayle Bradley... Perhaps a new framelock?

Wonderful news indeed.

I'd vote for Military (with a RIL frame lock and titanium, a la M4 Millie), Para 2 and Manix 2. Not original, but it would still be wonderful, IMO.

That's all it really needs to be, it's a good balance and it will cut just about forever at that hardness range and still have good toughness.
