S30V - Foil Wrap?

absolutely  1950* is brutal. Either foil wrap or PBC Special or a similar substitute. Speaking of, I was just getting ready to post a very similar question in regards to some S90V I'm getting ready to HT. How has the PBC Special been working out for the high heat, rather long soak autinitizing ? Is it providing the protection needed ?? Hope this isn't a highjack. :o Might as well combine, we're looking for the same answers ;)

I know Tracy mickly at Midwest has PBC Special http://www.midwestknifemakers.com/vcom/index.php?cPath=57&osCsid=cf969fb1611a762f7640cf85bff1bd23 Tracy ?? How is that stuff working out ?

I use foil myself. I haven't had a chance to try the PBC stuff yet. I have read several threads on the stuff and believe it to be a good alternative to foil but I wouldn't use it with out practicing on several 'sacrificial' blades first.

I'll make all you guys a deal: I'll give the first 10 guys here a 1/3lb of this stuff to try. That should be enough for two to three blades. There's a couple conditions. You have to use it and report back here some time in the next 30 to 45 days. Pictures would be great if you can, but not required. If you know you aren't going to use it in that time frame, please let some one else have a shot at this. I guess that is just one condition.

Reply here if you want to test it and report back here and then send me a PM with your address. We'll count down the ten guys that answer here in order of post. Let's hope we all don't get arrested for shipping/receiving a white, unidentified white powder substance.

David, you are #1, nine left to go.

Here's the list.
1. David Wesner
2. Mike Mossington
3. Micad
4. ib2v4u
5. gene martin
6.

10.

Thanks for the input.

Tracy: I will try some of that - if you haven't already had 10 responses, I can email my address.

I'll try some if a heat treat of around 1500 in an electric kiln is the type of heat treat you are looking to check out. I use mostly 1095/15n20 damascus or nickleson file steel and some 5160. Thinking of trying some of that new stainless that Admiral has and was talked about after Blade show on a copy of a Russian tactical a guy wants. Would follow directions and report back Don't think I will be making it to the stainless in the 30 days though, so you decide.

Hey that sounds great Tracy  I'll put it to the test as soon as I get it. I'll try it on the S90V @ 2100* and report right back. That should be a good test for it ;)

ib2V4u, note that the "PBC Special" is not intended for use below 1650F.

For temps in the 1500F range, use regular PBC.

Will the special fail to work below the 1650 or is it just unnecessary to use the special. How close to finished can you have the blade. Tracy if you think that my using it on a couple of blades in the 1500 degree range is a waste please sent it on to another maker who needs the higher temps. Because it maybe a bit before I get and use the stainless or some D2

Doesn't S30V require an oil quench or interrupted quench? Do you just quench with the blade in the foil? Sorry 'bout the hi-jack I'm working on an S30V blade that I want to heat treat myself.

Would "Satanite" or any other refractory coating be useful for preventing scale formation? I'm definitely interested in this plate quenching method now!

Foil foil foil.

Don't risk it with anything else, if the blade is of any value to you.
With powders etc (not foil) you will _absolutely ruin_ your blade if
it there's a problem - with powder falling off etc.

1900F is utterly unforgiving to a blade, compared to good ole 1450F.

Also, if you go with a powder, make sure to protect the oven _itself_
from it, it will eat into the brick and it will destroy stainless foil envelopes
for a long time to come, till you scrape it off.

Tracy no need to send any this way, I have both types
but I will input..
I didn't think or know anything about using the PBC special under 1600 :o

I'm about to see what happens though :o
I just coated 14 1085 blades with it today

The only thing that comes to mind why not to use it under 1600 is removing it after the heat treat.. well,,, we'll see now...

I like the dipping though I'm going to need to dip them one more time

also I will mention I bought 3 containers of it and I didn't use as much as 1/4 of one of them with the first 14 dips.. it's going to go a long ways !!

the steel being 1085 is making me nervous though :o
I don't mind 1095 but this is the first time with 1085 and not because I wanted to use it.. the dang company screwed up the order twice now on the first and only order so far .

Is this the powder special or the new liquid stuff?

Dan
it's the new liquid type.
they, Brownneils, told me it's just mixed with water to suspend it. it will settle so mixing it up with your blade when coating doesn't hurt :)
