some of the guy along the way have been saying they have a time getting a polish on S30V Mike F sent me some back along and I got to mess with it last night,
the flats are just hand rubbed..
after heat treating it the other day. this is what I came up with.
you can see in the middle picture some Clouds and the phone line running in from the pole. of course it looks bent because of the Hollow grind.
do you guy have some picture of S30V that you've polished, I'd like some comments on your experience with it.

Cool!

thanks Mike.
the picture is not a good one, once I get the knife done I'll post a picture of it..
don't be surprised if it's all satin finished though :foot: :D
I'm not a big fan of a mirror polish, it looks to much like chromed nickel :D
thanks again for the Steel Mike..

Dan, YW, it was my pleasure. Seeing the blade is the reward!

I still like a mirror on some knives. Other blades seem to insist on a handrub. On that blade, if I were doing it, the spine and bevel would end up mirrored and the flats handrubbed, to show off the angles. But, that's just me.

I look forward to seeing the finished piece. It's a cool blade. Nanc sure liked it.

nice work on the blade dan:thumbup: ;) I like the images too:)

Clouds ?? I thought that was a great hamon !! Mirror polish on S30V ? that's spelled masochist !! Does look nice though .

thanks Kerry:)

Mike,thanks,
..I do, do them this way from time to time but for me it depends on the handle style also. something that may set it off also, I'm sure you know what I mean..the flats are not done real good right now I was looking to get the Polish some what right.
Hmmm you know?
I'm not sure if you saw it or not.. but the spine is basically a swag all the way back and Mirrored also
I didn't think about it, but, by looking at the picture the spine looks flat 90 deg. doesn't it..that of what you can see is only half of the spine..funny how pictures trick the eye..thanks Nanc for me..:)

Robert :D a hamon sure would be a trick on this stuff,,:)
that wasn't to to bad to do though, I found a little trick with this stuff real fast..
normaly I grind up to 600 grit then to a 1000 grit by hand say on 154CM then to the buffer with white Rouge.
((I only tempered this to 425 deg so it's hard as a rock right now..:o ))
after I went to the 1000 grit I went to 1500 then to 2000 grit by hand and then went to White and then on to Green chrome rouge.. and at that time it wasn't just the way I thought it should be

then I thought about some polish cloth I have:confused: ,, sunshine cloth
it worked like a charm..:D if you guys need some get a hold of Rene Roy for it..:)

Nice finish, you've got more patience than me! I have enough trouble getting a half way decent hand rubed finish on S30V, never mind a mirror finish!

Yeah, Dan, I saw that swedged mirror spine right away....very cool. That's why I made mention of leaving it mirrored. At first I misread what you were saying and went back and said, "Man, my eyes are bad. It doesn't look flat." :D A flat spine I'd rub like the flats.

I loved those deep hollow-ground daggers of the early 80's that had a narow flat ran all the way don to the ricasso. Rub that with mirrored bevels and that always tripped my trigger. Putr a tiny mirror finished fuller down the center of that and I'd get even more excited. :)

HI Will, Thanks
by looking at that the work in the knife you sent to me for Bruce's auction you have the patience for it

MIke I have to make a dagger here soon and I'll be using a 2 1/2" wheel for the hollows, I started it once and wasn't happy with the grind, I may just add a fuller and do that.:D

you guys have an Idea what would look good for a handle on this one?
I'm thinking a Stag Taper if I can find one big enough in my stash..
and maybe a SS guard (shape?) and Pommel..?

I may finish this one and take it to the NCCA show this month..that will make maybe a total of Two I'll have there :o :)

Dan,
Handle material? Cream and black mammoth bark with water buffalo spacers of course!:D
Just my .02 but I know you can pull it off!

that sounds good Matt but doing the bark on both sides mite be a problem
it may have to be a stick tang handle where I already cut the tang down,

unless I mortis it..HMMMM I'm thinking :) or I could Frame tang it..and then use the spacers.. yes YES!.. it's been a while since I've done one of those..
thanks..:)

Dan, That is drop dead fantastic. My hat is of to you Sir. A lot of work. I hope the future customer can appreciate it. Fitzo ask a few months back that I do up a post on Mirror finishing D-2. Like the S30V, Makers are saying that it can't be done. Now that I'm back from Riverside, I'll try to get it posted. Once again. Great work Sir! MIke

Hi, Mike. Thanks, I would appreciate you writing that up again. You did that once before but I couldn't find it. I do seem to remember that it involved hard felt wheels to avoid the dreaded orange peel.

High polish does not enjoy the overall popularity it once did, so it seems; so a little instruction on it now and then is a good thing.

Hope you had a good trip.:)

thanks Guys
Mike L I'd like to see how you do it ..I'm buffing very little, it's mostly hand sanding work after the grinding..this is the first time messing with this stuff for me..,,
